[Conventions] Do You Want A New Worlds 6?

It's been almost 3 years since New Worlds 5.

In previous years, the New Worlds conventions were an annual celebration of science fiction and fantasy enthusiasts put together by a bunch of dedicated fans. These various conventions were a great way to bring fans together to celebrate the shows, movies and franchises with people of like-minded interests. It was also a venue for geeks to "come out" of their respective geek closets and be proud of being exactly who they are.

Harry Potter fans wearing Hogwarts uniform's r...Image via WikipediaFor one reason or another, I missed out on the geek convention scene and only got to participate in 2007 after my father died. We weren't exactly close over the years and thus probably why he never got around to telling me all about the big geek conventions he was attending and even helping organize. So I only caught the last two big New Worlds events both held in 2007 - New Worlds: Transformed and New Worlds 5.

It's been almost 3 years since New Worlds 5. Don't you think it's about time we held another convention? I sure do.

[New Worlds Alliance] The Geeky Guide to TV

When I decided to better organize the way I approach Geeky Guide entries, I picked a category of entries for each day of the week. Mondays were for new movies while Fridays were for old movies and so on.

Thursdays was meant to be my TV day and that hasn't quite gone well since I tend to favor reviewing entire seasons of shows and not just individual episodes. This means that unless I've actually finished a TV show's season, then I had little to write about. Thus Thursdays have been joined by theater reviews and video postings from YouTube to help supplement for content.

Now I've just gotten into an agreement with my fellow geeks at the New Worlds Alliance to become their associate editor for TV content. This means that I finally have more of a venue for TV news and individual episode discussions and I'll probably cross-post a few Geeky Guide entries to the site as well.

So yes, let's all welcome my new column, The Geeky Guide to TV. Yeah, It wasn't a very creative title, but it certainly maintains close ties with this blog.

If you're interested in contributing science fiction and fantasy TV news or content to the site, feel free to contact me directly and we'll work something out.

[NaNoWriMo] Week 3 Update

Good grief, we're past the half way mark and it's already the start of the third week for NaNoWriMo. Just today I officially crept over the half way mark in terms of my word count with 26,726 words despite things like Facebook, geeky network TV, a new writing gig at the New Worlds Alliance website and of course real life concerns like work and enjoying time with my partner. Oh yes, so many things seem to want to stand in the way of my NaNoWriMo efforts to no avail - I shall keep writing!

My science fiction story is coming along decently enough. I know it's not exactly going to be the "next big thing" or anything like that. It's just a novel that will have at least 50,000 words but more importantly it will be my silly science fiction novel. So there!

As always, you can read the continued updates to my story at my Google Site dedicated to more creative efforts - The Gossamer Tower

Enough of this - back to writing!

[Movies] Avatar Day Preview

PhotonQ-AVATARImage by PhOtOnQuAnTiQuE via Flickr

August 21, 2009 was declared to be Avatar Day by James Cameron, who's directing this particular film. The main purpose of Avatar Day was to mark the official release of the movie's trailer along with special screenings at IMAX theaters around the world of less than 20 minutes of footage from the new movie.

Locally, we got to celebrate our own version of Avatar Day on August 24, 2009 at the IMAX theater at SM North Edsa, and yours truly was one of the lucky geeks who got to catch the screening along with other geeks from the New Worlds Alliance and Fandom Live!

Admittedly, the animation quality was top-notch and Cameron's utilization of the IMAX 3D format was beyond anything I had seen in a long time. I mean seriously, he managed to create true depth of field in the shots and sequences presented to us that really made one feel like they were truly immersed in the environment.

The universe presented in James Cameron's Avatar is a vibrant, colorful and rich world indeed. The creatures have drawn influence from some of the best and the brightest from the realms of science fiction and fantasy and it certainly looks like something I could get into. Plus there's the harsh industrial military side to things that certainly reminds one of The Matrix in terms of look and feel.

However we do need to temper our expectations when it comes to this movie - James Cameron has been raving about his radically new CGI engine and while the animation was clean, it didn't seem all that landmark. We've seen stunning CGI animation in movies like Beowulf and of course Final Fantasy: Spirits Within and Advent Children, so that's not a new thing. The fact that Cameron chose to showcase this new technology using computer-generated aliens (the blue-skinned avatars) seemed like a bit of a cop out since we didn't get to experience how well the technology could possibly render your average human.

The story is also something to be of concern about. The scenes presented paint a picture similar to the world of FernGully or even the whole civilized world meeting the "natives" that was addressed in the story of Pocahontas. The fact that we're comparing the story of this big budget science fiction film with animated feature films is a bit discomforting and I'm worried we're going to end up being really dumbed down when the movie comes out.

Still, Avatar Day was successful in convincing me to see this movie when it does come out in December. More so, I'm pretty convinced that the only way to truly enjoy this movie is to watch it at an IMAX theater, in order to fully appreciate what this movie has to offer.

Avatar is scheduled for release on Deceber 18, 2009. That means locally, we'll have just a week to catch it before the Metro Manila Film Festival starts and takes over all the theaters with the usual drivel we get every year.

[Fandom Live!] We:Make Live Action

Given the slew of remakes of classic movies, TV shows and cartoons of our childhood, the geeks of Fandom Live! decided to pick out animated TV shows and cartoons that we'd actually like to see done in live action as compared to how things like G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra seems to be turning out.

Fandom Live We:Make Live Action

For those unfamiliar, Fandom Live! is a web show put up by the geeks of the New Worlds Alliance to just talk about all things related to their fandoms. Other than more creative episodes like this, we also post reviews, discussions and other features related to the worlds of science fiction, fantasy and popular TV shows and movies.

[Fandom Live!] We:View Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

I'll start featuring the regular Fandom Live! videos on a more regular basis, if only to help promote the web show for what it's worth. I wonder if this means that there's a market for a Geeky Guide web show / vlog? What say you?

In this We:View (review if you're lousy at puns), the Fandom Live geeks talk about Michael Bay's latest adventure involving Megan Fox, some transforming robots and more Megan Fox.

[Fandom Live!] June Episodes

In case you geeky readers didn't already know, the Geeky Guide spends his Sunday evenings recording a web show called Fandom Live! with his fellow geeky friends where we talk about all things geeky and generally make fools of ourselves doing so. Not that this is a problem mind you - it's all in good fun as is the way of geeks.

So if you're looking for something else to kill time with on YouTube or if you're just curious as to what I look and sound like in real life, then check out a few of this month's episodes here.

Kudos to our friend Dek for the editing work and the amazingly funny comment / captions. Pardon her for the occasional typos - it's not like we're paid to do any of this after all, haha.

[NWA] Fandom Live WeView: Watchmen

Well, I appeared on another Fandom Live! segment, and it turned out pretty decently after two failed attempts to get it onto uStream. We're not working with YouTube as an alternative and it seems to have turned out decently.

And I remembered to look at the camera a lot more this time.

In this episode, the geeks do a "WeView" of Jack Snyder's adaptation of Watchmen. Don't worry, I still have a more formal review coming in the weeks to come.

[NWA] The Geek on Fandom Live!

A few weeks ago, I finally returned to Fandom Cafe during one of their recording sessions for the Fandom Live! UStream show. It was fun to watch and one thing led to another and ultimately this meant me considering doing a show.

Two weeks later, I found myself back at Fandom sitting in front of the camera talking about Joss Whedon's Dollhouse with some of the other geeks. It was my first appearance on a web show and you'll notice I keep staring at the monitor instead of the camera in the first video, hehe.

Yes, I'm the guy in green.

[NWA] The New Worlds 5 Convention

This is a Tri-Blog entry that will appear on all three of my blogs: The Geeky Guide to Nearly Everything, Beyond Dinobot Island and Moonbase 8.

For Multiply users, go here instead.

Last Saturday, I did manage to go to New Worlds 5, the annual Philippine science fiction and fantasy convention as hosted by members organizations of the New Worlds Alliance. While this may have been the fifth event of its kind, personally it was my first real convention apart from the New Worlds: Transformed event earlier in the year, which was more of an exhibit than anything else.

Overall, it was a blast for a geek like me and I don't understand how I've consistently managed NOT to attend these events for the past five years.

First off, I'm glad that a sizable number of people decided to brave the bomb threats in order to attend the event. Most of the member groups were in full force with some unable to attend due to security concerns. While as much as they were missed, the rest of us made due as best as we could and as you look at the pictures above, you can see things went pretty well.

The were loads of fun events - my favorite being the two sets of Jedi Academy sessions held throughout the day - and even if they weren't quite the same activities previously announced, still it was loads of fun and it seems a lot of the visitors also enjoyed as well.

My primary allegiance remains with Via Astris and I hung around their booth for most of the day. It was in a prime spot near the entrance and regardless of its location, the mock-up of the original Enterprise bridge was more than enough to attract hardcore geeks and curious spectators alike. The bridge now features a replica of the Captain's Chair and the Helm, which even had loads of lights and switches that actually worked! Strangely enough, I did not actually take a seat during the entire day. More likely I think I don't think it right to take a seat until I get my hands on a science officer's uniform, hehe.

The event was made even better with the number of folks who came in costume. It's one thing for the member organizations to have their members in costume (and changing costumes throughout the day to show cause with their other groups for those who are part of multiple fandoms) but we had a good number of outside folk who had just come to act out as their favorite characters or to compete in the costume competition. My heart goes out to the pair who pulled off the Goblin King and Sarah from the original Labyrinth movie - that so rocked! We even had a Thor and Enchantress pair vying for the top prize against the likes of Ultraviolet and Davy Jones.

I was there starting around 02:30pm and didn't go home well past 10:00pm. I ended my day with a Tribble in tow, a fake ID card ala-Supernatural and having accomplished several tasks like signing up for my NWA Library card and watching all the Star Wars footage of international members of the 501st trying to whistle after eating polvoron. Very evil indeed.

I'm glad I finally got to go to a "real" convention, as it were, and am definitely looking forward to the next one. The only question is...what costume should I wear next time around?

[NWA] New Worlds 5 Pushing Through

New Worlds 5

Despite the recent bombing at Glorietta 2, it has been confirmed that the New Worlds 5 science fiction and fantasy convention will push through as scheduled on October 27, 2007 at the Glorietta Activity Center.

The management at Ayala Malls has assured everyone that security will be tightened for the event and the security of the patrons is their top priority. In line with this, anyone coming in costume or bringing equipment or fan gear to the event should be prepared to have your bags and boxes searched. It might also help not to bring props that look too much like actual weapons to avoid issues with the mall management.

Lets show them that we're not afraid! See you all on Saturday!

[Philippines] Bombing at Glorietta 2

This is a Tri-Blog entry that will appear on all three of my blogs - The Geeky Guide to Nearly Everything, Beyond Dinobot Island and Moonbase 8.

Glorietta 2 Bombing (Source: AP)At around 01:40pm local time, an explosion rocked the shopping complex of Glorietta 2 in Makati City, normally touted as the city's core financial area. I was at home at the time, totally unaware of the entire situation, just busying myself with my uploads and downloads. I went to bed at around 02:00pm.

Brian |kitchengod| woke me up closer to 03:00pm - he hadn't slept right away - in order to tell me the news about the explosion. I was having trouble with my asthma and I found that I couldn't get back to sleep despite the obvious lack of it. It's always the way with me. Eventually I went downstairs to join Jayson |kukuripupu| in watching the news.

It's a chilling sight - a place we'd normally pass through on our way to other stores and such. From the images shown on the news, clearly the center of the explosion was somewhere near that particular atrium, a normal high-traffic point for people to go through, people like us. Initially they didn't want to jump to the conclusion that it was a bomb, but of course it was obvious. No LPG explosion could do that kind of damage unless gas was leaking out into the mall for the entire morning.

It's pay day for us at the office and I'm certain there would have been agents who decided to head to the mall to enjoy their salaries. I can't help but wonder if we've lost anyone at the office given how many employees we have. Heck, that applies to any call center - who else would be at the mall at 01:40pm when most people are stuck at work?

Reports are mixed - it shows that there are around 80 wounded with somewhere between4-8 of those confirmed dead. The numbers keep shifting around since they've been transporting more critical cases from the Ospital ng Makati over to the Makati Medical Center and so on, thus some cases are getting counted twice. It's all madness. Eventually the police have ruled out the possibility of an LPG explosion - they've confirmed that this was caused by a bomb

This is not the first time we've had bombings in the Metro - it seems to happen time and time again. Naturally we'll get all security conscious and the alarms will sound and political statements condemning the attacks will be made. It's all been done before. I feel bad that it has happened and that it's probably going to happen again. It seems like we never learn from the mistake of the past. When you raise the level of security, you don't relax after a months of peaceful bliss. You don't scrimp on security checks and you don't stop having bomb-sniffing dogs roam public areas. That's the nature of these things - you can't relax once it's happened since it will make them confident in the knowledge that they've had some level of success and that they can try again and again and again.

Now what? We wait for the results of the investigation and perhaps for a terrorist group to step forward and claim responsibility. We will mourn for the dead and we will celebrate the tales of chivalry and heroism. We'll find comfort in the knowledge that our loved ones have survived and we will regret the passing of those who haven't. In the end, life has to go on or they win. Who's they, you ask? Sometimes I don't even know anymore. All I know is that someone felt that human lives aren't valuable, that there was something greater that justified these deaths in their heads. Why do people like that exist in this world?

We're supposed to have a General Assembly for our Department tomorrow, a sort of team-building activity at a bar also in Makati, since our office is in the area. I have no idea how that's going to go. I dread going to work later tonight not because of my lack of sleep but more because of potentially hearing grim news or having to deal with clients panicking about all this. It seems so wrong to go to work on a day like this since they may be other attacks but then if we allow fear to rule our lives, then in the end the infamous they still win. We must persevere.

Then there's the New Worlds 5 convention next weekend slated to be held at the Glorietta Activity Center. I wonder if even that will be able to push through. I really hope it does - we need something more to smile and celebrate about.

And things were going so well.

[NWA] Sci-Fi Philippines September 'Thon

Last September 15, 2007, Sci-Fi Philippines held it's big science fiction movie / TV marathon over at Brash Young Cinema. Personally, it was my first 'thon ever and I was pretty excited since we had been trying to flesh out the movie list for weeks now over on the mailing list and the general plans around the day's selection was pretty exciting.

Little did we know that this would be a truly unique 'thon among 'thons - this now turning into an account of the story of the tale of a group of geeks who surmounted all technical odds in the name of science fiction. [insert incidental music here]

I arrived a bit past two and Burt wasn't there yet so we had to await. He arrived closer to 02:30pm and opened up Brash and we all made our way around the room in order to deploy our things - a mix of random consumables and science fiction books that had been brought just to be shared with the group and other reasons. I made my way around to plug in all the fans and get them set up - something I had noted in my previous trips to BYC with Via Astris.

Then *FLASH* - something popped when Burt tried to turn on the TV. It was plugged into the correct socket on the AVR, but given the general condition of the equipment, who knows what voltage was really pumping out of that thing. The 'thon almost ended right there.

The first back-up plan was to try and watch the movies we had scheduled out on Burt's laptop. The screen was pretty small and the sound was horrible - not a good things since we started the 'thon with the The Quatermass Experiment, this being the 2005 remake of the 1953 classic. I say this was a bad thing since it was more of a talkie given it was a British science fiction film, so the lack of decent sound had all of us a bit frustrated, perhaps especially Sister Iris.

Burt started texting away and finally confirmed that the projector at his office was not is use so he sped off to pick it up along with some PC speakers. The rest us tried to endure the film while snacking on chips, the sack of cookies Sister Iris brought and some siopao from Davao courtesy of Dom. Within 20 minutes, Burt was back with loads of gear - it was off to work for the geeks!

We improvised a projector screen using some old Styrofoam sheets leftover from previous events and rigged up a mount for the projector using the mini-cooler Burt had brought along. I twiddled with the keystone settings to compensate for the somewhat extreme angle. Throw in the DVD player Burt brought along instead of the laptop and *PRESTO* - one jury-rigged projector set-up. On with the 'thon!

Since he had started it, we eventually finished The Quatermass Experiment. In order to remove the bad taste in our collective mouths we switched gears and watched the Blink episode from the newest Doctor Who series and it was killer! I'm pretty sure everyone loved it (especially Sister Iris) and it certainly has me wanting to buy the series once it comes out on Asian DVDs, hahaha.

We then watched most of the pilot episode of Odyssey 5 but missed the last few minutes because of a bum CD. That forced a snack run to the nearby Chowking just so we could hurry back and watch the three-part season ender of the newest Doctor Who. It was pretty cool too and I have to admit I'm hooked!

That last Doctor Who piece ate up most of the night, although I'm definitely not complaining. We had time for just one more movie and settled on the somewhat cheesy time travel flick, The Final Countdown. It was mostly a poster movie for the US Navy but it was still fun to watch together with the group since we could all spot the blatant errors in continuity and in the science while commenting that the young Martin Sheen really looked like Emilio Estevez - go figure.

The night ended with most of us heading over to the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf over at Greenbelt 3 past midnight for more great conversation and more than our fair stares given he had someone in costume and I'm sure we were pretty loud considering how the branch seems to suck up all sound.

The photos flashing above pretty much cover the before and after - I was too busy watching to take pictures during the 'thon of course, hahaha! I can hardly wait for the next one - we're planning on watching some of the cheesiest science fiction films known to man. It's going to take a fair number of emails to settle on a final list of movies / shows, and even then we might not get to watch them all.

[GeekyCast] The Return...

No, I'm not referring to the cheesy William Shatner Trek novel of the same name but about the return of the GeekyCast to a Geeky Guide near you! After almost a month of silence, I'm finally not overly busy enough to squeeze in a short GeekyCast for all my Geeky fans. Applause anyone? LOL

Well, it may not be much, but personally I enjoy my odd little podcasts here and there and it's nice to have the luxury of posting a new episode. Perhaps when things aren't so hectic I'll be able to get back to daily updates but for now this will have to do.

Today I just go over the general updates in terms of what the heck happened in the past month. Of course I focused on the geekier events in recent history while at the same time plugging future events in the coming months.

Enjoy it for what it's worth! We're more definitely back on the air!

[Geeky Guide] Welcome Richie!

In line with the on-going call for bloggers to join the Geeky Guide, it is my pleasure to announce a new addition to the team.

Richie has been predominantly a friend of mine from LiveJournal much like Arbet, although we can probably trace back to my (*gasp*) mIRC days.

Richie, a fellow friend from the New Worlds Alliance, will be contributing his insights on music, anime although more specifically mecha and other things of geeky interest. He should start posting by next week as soon as we fully resolve his access rights via Blogger.

I'm in talks with a few more bloggers and will be announcing them as well as soon as we work out the kinks in all this.

So let's all welcome Richie to the Geeky Crew!

[Metro] New Worlds: Transformed - Day 6

This is a Tri-Blog entry that will appear on all three of my blogs The Geeky Guide to Nearly Everything, Beyond Dinobot Island and Moonbase 8.

These pictures are also available on Multiply.

I would have posted this sooner had I not been without sleep for more than 24 hours, haha. Darn, there goes my perfect posting record for LJ, hehe.

I finally got the chance to attend the New Worlds: Transformed event over at the Power Plant Mall at Rockwell, Makati yesterday and it was a blast! It was my first time to attend a seriously large science fiction / fantasy event and the geeky fanboy in me clearly jumped for joy upon entering the exhibit area.

Saturday was a great day to go since everyone was really getting into the spirit of things by coming in costume. You won't believe the number of times friends were asking me why I wasn't in costume only to realize a few moments afterward that I didn't have any...at least not yet. =P

My thanks to everyone for being so nice and putting their best foot forward for the event. It kinda blows my mind to think that this isn't even the full, official convention the group is supposed to have yearly! I can't wait!

Thus this ultimately begs the question...any Dune fans out there? =D
