[Videos] Aquaman Movie Trailers

It feels like there's been a distinct shift in tone between the first trailer for DC's Aquaman movie and its most recent one released over the weekend. The first one had already been pretty promising but on the whole it felt largely in tune with the Justice League movie in terms of tone and even overall (literal) color.

Aquaman - Official Trailer 1

The latest trailer is so much brighter and feels more like how Thor Ragnarok felt when it came out given it's modern adaptation of the classic Kirby style that had defined that comic book back in the day. They even included the often ridiculed orange Aquaman costume, albeit with a modern update to make it feel more awesome.

AQUAMAN - Final Trailer - in theaters December 21

Sure, part of the differences probably involve how more post production work has been completed and thus some of the more visually impressive scenes are now included as part of the trailer. Beyond that, it certainly feels that DC is really trying to pivot how their movies are represented and may just shake off the dark and gloomy tone that Zack Snyder had imposed on the earlier movies, much to their detriment.

Basically I'm saying that the trailers look great and very un-DC movie-like and that may be a great thing when the movie finally hits theaters in December. Of course for us in the Philippines it means that we'll probably see it in January given the theater lockdown that is the Metro Manila Film Festival.

[Videos] Spacedock on the Clone Wars

So Spacedock, one of my favorite YouTube channels for geeking out over the technology of science fiction, has recently posted a few more videos covering the different vessels of the Star Wars Clone Wars era. While the channel has featured a number of the capital ships in the past, the recent videos kind of dive deeper into some of the nuances of the technologies utilised during the conflict and some of my favorite vessels.

Star Wars: LAAT/i Republic Gunship - Ship Breakdown

First there's the LAAT/i Republic Gunship, which is definitely one of the more memorable ships from the time period. As much as a lot of Star Wars space combat has more or less emulated the sort of old school naval combat of the World War II era, the Republic Gunship sort of emulated the role of the Huey helicopter in the Vietnam War. Of course this Star Wars equivalent is a lot stronger with more diverse capabilities that went a long way to support Clone forces. Plus it looked pretty cool.

Star Wars: The Starfighters of the CIS

Then there's the more recent video that goes over the various starfighters of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, better known as the Separatists. It's not often that we get to really look at these ships since they only received limited screen time in the movies and a lot more work has gone into covering the Imperial-era TIE fighters and related craft. This video actually covers a lot of great details about the various fighters despite the relative brevity of the video.

If you share this geekery over science fiction ships, you can get started by checking out the Spacedock playlist of videos about other Star Wars ships or just explore the full channel on your own.

[Videos] The Ships of The Expanse

The book-to-television-series, The Expanse is a fascinating franchise with some pretty distinct technology. Some science fiction stories stay light on the science part at times when it comes to things like how their spacecraft work or how combat is structured, but not this series. The Expanse is definitely distinctly harder science fiction that depicts possible developments in the not too distant future.

YouTube channel Spacedock (they're on Patreon) has a unique partnership of sorts with the team behind The Expanse and have been steadily releasing unique content about the technical details of their ships and other aspects of their technology. Spacedock does more than just videos on The Expanse and I particularly appreciate their discussions of Star Wars and Star Trek vessels.

You can view the full playlist of videos here, but I've embedded a few videos as well to give you a taste of the joys of these videos. If you're the type to geek out over the theoretical technical aspects of fictional ships from a possible future, then you totally have to be watching this channel.

[Videos] 107 Facts About the Incredibles

With The Incredibles 2 rocking theaters and proving just how much love there is for this franchise, it felt like a timely idea to re-share this Channel Frederator 107 Facts video about the original 2004 The Incredibles movie. And given how much effort went into this project, you can imagine that there are a heck of a lot of different aspects to this movie (now a franchise) that are totally worth digging into.

And if you're feeling brave enough to risk potential spoilers, they've already created a new 107 Facts video for The Incredibles 2 because we just can't get enough of the super-powered Parr family.

[Music] Childish Gambino's "This Is America" Music Video

Every now and then you come across a piece of art that just blows you away. It makes you think things and feel things and you can't even find words to encapsulate those thoughts and feelings and you're just left more than a little dumbfounded after the experience of it all.

That's sort of how I felt after finally sitting down to watch Childish Gambino's "This Is America" music video. Now I haven't exactly been that much of a close follower of Donald Glover's music but social media couldn't stop talking about this one and I can fully appreciate why now.

Or at least I think I can appreciate. There's just so much to unpack and dissect and I've already watched it a few times and I'm still noticing more things. This is crazy and beautiful and scary and groundbreaking and amazing and depressing all at the same time. And a heck of a lot more.

You just have to watch it. Maybe you'll figure out more than I could. Maybe we'll just end up with two different yet equally valid opinions of the work.

[Videos] Everything Wrong With Thor Ragnarok

I loved Thor: Ragnarok and even gave it a glowing review. But at the same time it is not lost on me that even the most enjoyable movies take certain leaps in logic in order to make sure the movie as a whole experience works out well. And I find odd amusement with the antics of CinemaSins and how they nitpick movies to pieces all in a highly satirical manner.

Movies were never meant to be perfect. And that's part of their beauty.

So while everyone is still going crazy over Infinity War, let's take a breather with this CinemaSins take-down of sorts of Thor: Ragnarok.

[Videos] 107 Facts About Pacific Rim

With Pacific Uprising coming out soon, it's timely that the folks at Channel Frederator have finally put together one of their 107 facts videos for the kaiju fighting franchise. And if you think that there isn't enough material from a single movie and a prequel comic to create one of these videos, well, you're wrong. I was surprised, too.

As much as this movie was ultimately sold as the big giant robot indulgence movie, there's still a lot of thought that went into this. I guess it shows that even mostly mindless violence still needs that spark of creativity in order to make sense.

[Video] Avengers: Infinity War New Trailer

Avengers: Infinity War has already broken the record for superhero movie pre-sales set earlier this year by Black Panther.

So what may be the final official trailer for Avengers: Infinity War dropped over the weekend including variants of the awesome poster art above. There's a heck of a lot of information to process in this trailer and I had to watch it a couple of times in succession before I felt satisfied that I had seen most of it. But apparently I had still missed stuff.

But even if you're not combing over the trailer for every possible detail of the movie to come, it's still pretty exciting since it shows a LOT of the action in the movie.

io9 has already picked apart the trailer better than I can, so you might as well check out their break-down for your reference. April can't come soon enough!

[Videos] 107 Facts About Fullmetal Alchemist

In celebration of the release of the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist movie on Netflix along with the first Fullmetal Alchemist cartoon and it's follow-up, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, I thought it might be fun to dig up this ChannelFrederator 107 facts list about the franchise.

FMA remains to be one of my favorite anime shows and it'll be interesting to see what kind of new interest the movie will bring to the franchise combined with the Netflix distribution of the cartoons. I for one will definitely re-watch the original shows for the full enjoyment of it all.

[TV] A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2 Trailer

The first season of A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix was surprisingly entertaining and managed to take a new spin on an already adapted story. Some interesting casting decisions resulted in great performances and very memorable episodes indeed.

It was over a little sooner than I had hoped but it still made for a great experience. And now we finally get our first glimpse of the second season - and man, it looks like it's going to be pretty bananas indeed.

[Movies] First Solo Teaser Trailers

With the Solo: A Star Wars Story set for May 2018 release, it has been a little unnerving that the marketing for this movie hasn't quite gotten into full gear For the longest time we just had this very direct to the point title card and little else. To be fair, this is the first time we're getting more than one Star Wars movie within a 12 month period, so things are rather close together.

But all that changed during this year's Super Bowl when we finally got our first teaser trailer only to get a longer teaser trailer the next day. So yeah, it's still the annoying teaser for a treaser trailer routine that is becoming more and more of a habit in Hollywood, but to be fair there were some rather meaty trailers.

[Videos] Star Wars: Rebels Mid-Season 4 Trailer

Because mid-season trailers are thing, we recently got our official mid-Season 4 trailer for Star Wars: Rebels as the show comes to an end. We also get a final air date for the last season - February 19, 2018. The first minute or so is mostly a clip show from past episodes but the second half of this trailer is pretty meaty.

But if you're that sort of person, you can also check out various trailer break-down artciles and videos by now, but naturally I'll favor content from channels like Star Wars Explained, which are among my personal favorites for YouTube surfing.

And while I don't want the show to end any more than you do, I am still excited to see how things will wrap up.

[Videos] 107 Facts About Cuphead

Cuphead was the posterchild of the indie scene last year as an odd run and gun game that celebrated the old Fleischer cartoons in terms of aesthetic and styling. Boss fights just seem to keep coming one after the other as you get through this rather challenging game.

So it was only a matter of time that ChannelFrederator's The Leaderboard would get around to running a 107 facts video to celebrate this truly novel game.

[Videos] Black Mirror Season 4 Featurettes

So you've already finished the short but traumatic binge-watch of Black Mirror's fourth season on Netflix. Now what? Well, apart from re-watching the entire series run thus far, you can also opt watch these per-episode featurette videos looking into some of the nuances of telling each story.

Don't complain, they're about a minute long, so that's really not much. This is scraping the bottom of the barrel for more Black Mirror content until another season comes along.

[Videos] About the Other Star Wars Holiday Special

We all remember the Star Wars Holiday Special, right? That unforgettable movie that gave us our first glimpse of Boba Fett (Don Francks) as an animated character and introduced to key characters like Malla (Mickey Morton) and Lumpy (Patty Maloney), the wife and son of Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew)?

Okay, it was actually a terrible movie with a questionable place in overall Star Wars canon. But at least they found a way to get the likes of Golden Girl Bea Arthur into a Star Wars related production right?

So apparently things could have been even weirder, at least according to this NerdSync video. So I guess we came out on top, relatively speaking?

[Videos] Who Is The First Doctor

This year's Doctor Who Christmas Special, Twice Upon A Time, is one that brings the current Doctor, as portrayed by Peter Capaldi, together with his first incarnation, as portrayed by David Bradley as the original actor, William Hartnell, who had passed away in 1975. Bradley had also portrayed Hartnell in the 50th anniversary documentary An Adventure in Space and Time.

For those not so familiar with the First Doctor and his adventures, the Doctor Who team has put together a quick video with highlights of his career and his time with the TARDIS.

[Videos] More Facts About Gravity Fall and The Nightmare Before Christmas

Some of my favorite YouTube content tends to include various trivia videos since I can listen to them while working on  other things, including this blog. They go into a lot of crazy detail about things we love and it's a mixed bag of the fascinating to the simply odd. But knowing more is a lot of fun and I have no regrets about things.

So here are some additional 107 Facts videos created by ChannelFrederator for subjects previously visited in such videos - Gravity Falls and The Nightmare Before Christmas. There's a lot of fun insights and things you'd never think to research on your own. And that makes for even more entertaining fandom feels.

[Star Wars] Spacedock Tackles Ships From The Last Jedi

Another YouTube channel that I enjoy following is Spacedock, a channel that focuses on the various space-faring vessels and vehicles from various science fiction franchises. His discussions range from more technical discussions of specific creations to analyses of various fictional battles.

In the months leading up to Star Wars: The Last Jedi and right after its  debut, the channel has tackled various vehicles from the movie in what detail they could manage based on information available. And I expect for there to be more videos to come as more information is revealed.

So here's a run-through of some of the videos focused on The Last Jedi that may be of interest.

[Videos] What You Need to Know Before Watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Star Wars Explained)

So I just watched Star Wars: The Last Jedi last night and I'm still processing things for a proper review out tomorrow. But I first wanted to share this video by Star Wars Explained that acts as a quick spoiler-free primer for the movie based on current Expanded Universe material from the books, comics and other media. Not all of the speculations were in the right place but most were pretty close or at least in the right direction.

So if you don't want to go into the movie blind, this is worth the 6+ minutes of your time to watch it.

[Videos] Other Ways to Experience Transformers: The Last Knight

So I still haven't bothered to watch Transformers: The Last Knight yet for obvious Michael Bay related reasons. As much as I love the Transformers franchise, I'm really more of an old school guy in terms of robot aesthetic and I'm too in live with logical story flow to even try to endure most Michael Bay ventures sober. So for the most part, reading io9's Spoiler FAQ for the movie was sufficient.

But now CinemaSins has finally applied it's particular brand of sarcastic nitpicking to the latest Transformers movie and it was a fun little ride. As much as it's interesting to see how they find little errors in movies that are universally celebrated as good, it's even better when they roast the obviously bad ones. And there is just so much to pick apart in this particular movie.
