[Videos] About the Other Star Wars Holiday Special

We all remember the Star Wars Holiday Special, right? That unforgettable movie that gave us our first glimpse of Boba Fett (Don Francks) as an animated character and introduced to key characters like Malla (Mickey Morton) and Lumpy (Patty Maloney), the wife and son of Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew)?

Okay, it was actually a terrible movie with a questionable place in overall Star Wars canon. But at least they found a way to get the likes of Golden Girl Bea Arthur into a Star Wars related production right?

So apparently things could have been even weirder, at least according to this NerdSync video. So I guess we came out on top, relatively speaking?

[Videos] 11 Best Halloween Cartoon Specials

Holiday themed special episodes for various shows and cartoons is not a new thing however one has to take note that a lot of the best cartoon moments tend to take place during Halloween special episodes even if they tend to exist outside the established canon.

And while we all love the many, many, many Simpsons Halloween specials over the years, they aren't the only cartoon series to go down that road. And it's nice that Channel Frederator has decided to come up with a list of 11 of the Best Halloween Cartoon specials - and it's a pretty good list.

[Personal] Happy Holidays Geeky Readers!

Happy Holidays, Everyone!

I really appreciate those of you who continue to patronize this blog. It remains a labor of love at this point but your continued visits do the blog help keep me going.

In line with this year's holiday season, I'll be taking a little break to spend quality time with the family but should be back in regular circulation around January 3, 2016. You may still see updates from me, but definitely not at my usual 6 posts a week frequency.

Do have a happy and safe holiday with your family and loved ones. It's the season for spending time with the people who matter to us most.

[Technicolor Musings] Happy Halloween Freaks!

Happy Halloween everyone! Hope you all had a fun night of trick-or-treating and wearing inappropriately sex costumes!

We're still a little hungover from O Bar's Liberation Pary 2015 and so I'll just leave you with this classic song from Hocus Pocus. One of the O Diva performances last reminded me of how much I want to re-watch this movie.

[TV] American Horror Story: Season 2 (Asylum)

Happy Halloween, everyone!

And what better way to celebrate today's spooky holiday with an appropriately spooky review, right? And there are few shows that capture the Halloween tone better than American Horror Story.

I don't think any of us really knew what to expect when this show first aired. After all, it was a horror TV series put together by the folks who gave us Glee. But then things just came together and their particular brand of crazy drama happened to make a lot more sense in a horror setting.

But then this second season took things into an even stranger direction given how the show doesn't exactly continue its stories from season to season. Apart from the reuse of actors from the first season, this second season features a completely different story in a completely different setting. Thus we're really looking more a each season acting as an independent serial of sorts - something that may just work for the series in the long run.

The show's third season, Coven,  has already begun airing, but for now we'll focus on the second.

[Gaming] Weekly Games with the Philippine Tabletop Gamers

Today, March 30, is International Tabletop Day, the brainchild of the folks at Geek & Sundry to celebrate gaming as a way of interacting with friends and family. And all you have to do is play a good old board game with your family or gather your friends for a nice little dungeon crawl - whichever game style floats your fancy.

Beyond the fact that I am meeting friends later for a night of tabletop gaming (and inevitably some drinking), I thought it might help commemorate today by talking about a way to address one of the biggest problem for gamers - finding players! Gaming circles here in the Philippines seem rather isolated and not so well-known. And so beyond immediate circles of friends, it's always nice to get in touch with like-minded gamers to try out new games and such.

Thankfully there's a group that's trying to open more doors for gamers to introduce them to new tabletop games, new players and hopefully form new gaming circles as well.

[Geekery] Read Comics in Public Day 2012

Thanks to the efforts of Brian Heater and Sarah Morean, August 28 is also celebrated as Read Comics in Public Day. Since 2010, the day has been used as a unique opportunity to celebrate the joy of comics and promote readership for sequential art.

So go out there, bring a comic book with you and snap a photo of yourself reading your graphic novel in a public location! Celebrate geekery! Go crazy!

And August 28 also happens to be my birthday. Yay me! It seems I've just turned 30!

I'll probably post my comic book reading photo over at my personal blog later today or more likely tomorrow. I have a busy day ahead of me after all.

[Technicolor Musings] Celebrate Love!

In a few days, it's going to be Valentine's Day. And as much as we can argue well into the wee hours of the morning about how this holiday is more likely the product of greeting card companies and that sort of thing, it's still a day that many people around the world take the time to recognize and celebrate. Like all other holidays, it's a day meant to be spent commemorating a particular event or concept, in this case the wonders of love.

It's far too easy to use this holiday as a time to lament one being single or any past relationships that suddenly return to the forefront of your memories. Don't fall into that humbug trap! Instead, why not focus on the positive and find something to be happy about today? Believe me, finding reasons to be happy in life will do a lot for your general sense of well-being. Plus some say that it'll even help you live longer.

So here are a few quick reminders for your Valentine's Day. At least off the top of my head.

[Movies] The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)

As a last holiday-related review, I finally took the time to watch the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, despite all the bad buzz about the TV special even among die hard Star Wars fans. But you know how people are when they come across a train wreck of a movie like this - you just can't help but stop and stare and see what the fuss is all about.

Finding a copy wasn't nearly as hard as finishing the show, I have to admit. It wasn't totally horrendous - but it was rather boring with significant pacing issues. I meant there are bad movies that are painful to watch and this was just a bit of a struggle to finish. I'll try to pinpoint precisely why this was so in the course of this review, which is my normal manner of trying to process something as weird as this.

It helps to appreciate that a lot of the "holiday specials" that are forced upon franchises, perhaps save for Doctor Who, tend to twist the characters into weird new ways that seems contrary to how they are normally depicted in the franchise's main movies, TV shows or whatever other medium it gets featured in. It's something that gets demanded of the franchise by the studio executives and is not typically driven by a true creative imperative.

And you know how that goes - once the demands of the business supersede the franchise's creative integrity, then you get some weird stuff instead.

[Google] Santa Claus Is Tech-Savvy

Every year Google has various gimmicks for the holiday season such as being able to track Santa Claus on Google Earth or the option to leave Santa Claus messages on a special hotline. But man, this year's gimmick is a heck of a lot of fun!

Initially Google made it possible to send your friends and relatives voice messages from Santa, for as long as they live in the US or Canada and you also have a US or Canadian phone number. I managed to test this out with a friend, and it worked out rather well. However the geographic limitation was a bit of a bummer.

But today they announced that you can now send video messages from Santa as well, and these YouTube hosted messages can either be posted on your Google+ page or send directly to the recipient via email.

I totally geeked out on this today and send a few close family members and friends some rather zany messages from Santa. Totally awesome way of celebrating the holidays - go try it out for yourself at SendACallFromSanta.com!

Happy Holidays, fellow Google Geeks!

[Holidays] Happy Mother's Day!

Today is the second Sunday of May and you know what that means....

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!

Into the Woods - The Witch

Oh yes, today is the we celebrate our mothers - those amazing ladies who brought us into this world. Whatever your personal issues may be, this is the day to move past all that and remind your mom that you love them and that you appreciate everything that they've done for you.

After all, not matter what they've done over the years, the reason is the same. To quote the Witch from Sondheim's Into the Woods, "I was just trying to be a good mother."

Yeah, I'm campy that way.

[Technicolor Musings] Love Is Always Worth Celebrating

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day, a holiday that is often met with very diverse and mixed emotions. Then again, it is a holiday dedicated to romantic love and people are quick to focus on what they lack instead of celebrating what they have. Thus the messaging gets rather mixed and instead I find that you end up hearing more people whining and moaning about not having dates for Valentine's Day instead of happy celebrations of love in all its forms.

Looking back at my personal blog, I noticed that I seem to say the same thing every Valentine's Day, if only briefly. So I thought it might be worth revisiting today at length here on the Geeky Guide as a little message to all those in love and those who are hellbent on finding love in a message for gay geeks and other lovers-in-waiting out there.

Let's face it - if gay geeks can find love despite being in two rather niche peer groups, why can't the rest of the world, right? Ultimately, it all begins with you and you alone.

[Daily Geekery] November 25, 2010

First, a very Happy US Thanksgiving Day to all you folks over in the United States! We may not celebrate the holiday around here, but given my work in the BPO industry, I still get what it's all about. So go enjoy your turkey! I kinda miss that dry, tasty bird.

So without further delay, items of geeky interest from the past 24 hours:

[Holidays] When Did Halloween Stop Being Scary?

It's the week before Halloween, and it's hard to come up with thematically appropriate blog entries in line with that. It's especially difficult given I'm not very good with scary things like horror movies, zombie-centric reality horror video games and sounds we hear in the middle of the night.

Flickr: memoflores - Halloween
Halloween
- by Guillermo Flores via Flickr.

But Halloween isn't scary at all these days. Halloween is actually mostly about sexy versions of different costumes that used to be scary. Instead of scary we now get cute. Instead of scary we get commercial, store-bought trinkets, plastic pumpkin baskets and perhaps a little make-up.

When we complain about the commercialization of holidays, the ones that usually come to mind are usually Christmas and Valentine's Day. Sure, it's bad that Hallmark has already altered space and time by creating so many days to celebrate with a thoughtful card, but we often forget that Halloween is totally not what it used to be.

Sure, I agree that kids shouldn't be too scared about things and they should be given a chance to celebrate the holiday. But apart from that, especially in the Philippines, we don't see much else beyond that. No adult-friendly scary events. No horror movie marathons at the movies. Nothing of that sort. Instead we're going to get a heck of a lot more fairy wings, cutesy devil horns and of course Plants Vs. Zombies style zombies, that clearly won't scare anyone.

Instead scary and gory is now politically inappropriate. Gory isn't safe. Monstrous is best left off network television. Instead we all want cheesy, happy, campy safe-for-TV-commercial brand costumes and cliches. It's sad really.

I'm not saying the holiday should only be about scaring folks. But it would nice if some parts of it were still scary for some of us beyond the thought of how much costumes are going to cost. Don't we deserve a little scaring every now and then?

Just a thought.

[Fandom Live!] June Episodes

In case you geeky readers didn't already know, the Geeky Guide spends his Sunday evenings recording a web show called Fandom Live! with his fellow geeky friends where we talk about all things geeky and generally make fools of ourselves doing so. Not that this is a problem mind you - it's all in good fun as is the way of geeks.

So if you're looking for something else to kill time with on YouTube or if you're just curious as to what I look and sound like in real life, then check out a few of this month's episodes here.

Kudos to our friend Dek for the editing work and the amazingly funny comment / captions. Pardon her for the occasional typos - it's not like we're paid to do any of this after all, haha.

[Geek Holidays] Happy Odd Day!

MathematicsImage via Wikipedia

Well what did you know - a geek holiday almost got by me! My thanks to my friend Tobie for pointing out that today - May 7, 2009 or 05-07-09 is one of 6 days this century when the date consists of three odd numbers in sequence.

So Happy Odd Day fellow math geeks! It's yet another day to embrace our love of numbers!

[Geeky Guide] A Fairly Geeky 2008

Heading to Horseshoe BayImage by Patrick Doheny via FlickrWell fellow geeks, it's the last day of the year. This may not have been the most productive year in terms of the Geeky Guide, but we certainly made some interesting steps forward.

It was great that I finally go back to the US this year although it was a shame that I didn't get the chance to meet any Geeky readers that might have been in the Los Angeles area. Sure, it drastically reduced my posting frequency, but I did get to see a lot of great things while I was out there and I got to watch the LA production of Wicked to boot!

This year was one of my most gadgetful since I finally had a laptop and a pretty gnarly digital camera but sadly I lost both when someone broke into my home. That forced me and my partner to move out of Pasay over to Makati and thus further reduced my posting frequency given the initial (and somewhat on-going) challenges with our internet provider.

This was also the year that I finally decided to get a domain for this blog and while I probably haven't maximized its potential given the domain, at least we already have it and that's a good start. Maybe as we move forward we'll think of bigger and brighter things to do with it, haha.

So to all you fellow geeks or just wandering readers who lost their way and ended up here, let me just greet you a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Geeks are coming for you 2009!!!

[Holidays] Happy Holidays!

I'm going to be going home to the folks for Christmas Eve and so instead I have this scheduled blog entry to make sure I don't forget to say...

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FELLOW GEEKS!!!

[Holidays] Happy Halloween!

Hey fellow geeks!

Sorry I haven't been posting as much - it's been a pretty bad week since someone broke into our apartment and stole my laptop, Dizzy, and our Sony DSC-H50, Shane.

Yes, we name our things.

But despite that, I thought it would be prudent to at least drop a line over here and make sure I got my holiday greetings out. Don't go too overboard on the candy!

Here's a little something in line with tonight's events...
