[Videos] Dont Hug Me I'm Scared

With the release of Episode 6 on Father's Day, Becky and Joe web series Don't Hug Me I'm Scared is finally over. And given how much of a following the series has gained since its release, naturally the internet was ablaze with theories on what it meant and thus how the entire series fit together as one larger narrative.

YouTube Explained's video  came out fairly quickly and I think it was a pretty comprehensive analysis with a lot of references to past episodes and other fun stuff. I especially appreciated its efforts to address the date 19 June 1955, which was one of the primary memes in the series that was present from the very beginning. And given how his theory flows, the resulting explanation sort of makes sense:

Channel thought released his own theory for all this, although it felt a little shallow or not quite really well-thought out. Maybe it would have been better given more time. But I did appreciate his efforts to also explain 19 June 1955.

But the explanation I was really waiting for was CP Games. He had really put a lot of thought into the different videos and had already posted a comprehensive analysis of the first 5 episodes and how those ones fit together. Sure, not all of his ideas were necessarily correct in the light of the final sixth episode, but then, he presented a lot of good ideas.

And his take on Episode 6 and thus the whole series is actually quite well-said. Sure, he doesn't become hyper focused on all the different Easter eggs but the resulting concept is a pretty solid one and a take on things I'll probably adopt to some extent.

What did you think of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared? Which theory made the most impact on you? Or maybe you have your own theory you'd like to share, feel free to post in the comments.

[Philippines] President Noynoy Aquino's Communication Issues

I was initially thinking about commenting on the just-passed FCC Rules regarding Net Neutrality, but I haven't found a copy of the actual decision at this point. It feels a tad too early to jump on this particular issue, although clearly net neutrality advocates are up in arms about the lack of substance in the official rules voted on by the FCC.

Instead, it seemed like a more timely notion to talk about our current President Nonoy "PNoy" Aquino and his many "successful" media gaffes in the past few months.

Oh yes, ever since he was sworn in as the 15th President of the Philippines, he's had a mix of good and bad moments in the eyes of the media - something that brings odd memories of his sister, Kris Aquino. You'd think that a family that has lived in the public eye for most of their lives such as the Aquinos would be better equipped to handle this sort of thing, but clearly this is not the case. And this especially applies to PNoy.

[Media] Social Media Revolution

I love statistics - it's probably because of my background as a debater or something. You have to admit that we tend to appreciate information more when it's presented to us in factoids, charts and percentages. It somehow makes things easier to understand.

Socialnomics has put together an interesting video looking at the effect of social media on the current marketplace. Sure, it's clearly directed at companies in order to convince them to start allocating funds towards social media advertising and other online efforts, but that doesn't the fact that the video does present a number of interesting notions and ideas and certainly shows us an aspect of our development in this social media driven world.

[Viral Video Chart] The Process

Sometimes, the corporate world turns out to do some really stupid things all for the sake of being all modern and following the process. Sometimes we try to factor in too many ideas in order to avoid appearing racist or inconsiderate and sometimes we become too accommodating since "the customer is always right" and things like that.

This video is a bit extreme, but there's a definitely as point being made, hehe.

To all my friends involved in advertising and media, this is for you!

[Web] Some CollegeHumor

CollegeHumorImage via WikipediaIn recent weeks, I've seriously gotten into the CollegeHumor original videos. Sure, I've been visiting the site on and off over the past few months, especially because of their original web series, Street Fighter: The Later Years but then in a recent boredom-driven YouTube run, I started going through their stuff.

What I found beyond their live action original web series were a few really funny original cartoon sketches using some of the most significant (or at least memorable) characters of our collective childhood. If you haven't ventured into the world of CollegeHumor, then perhaps these three videos might help you better understand their particular of funny yet irreverent humor.

[TV] SkyCable Losing Solar Channels

New SkyCable Channels

In case you haven't been paying attention to all the notices, starting January 1, 2008 local cable TV outfit SkyCable will no longer feature any of the Solar Entertainment channels. This means the loss of JackTV, ETC Entertainment Channel, ETC 2nd Avenue, Crime/Suspense, Basketball TV, and Solar Sports for all SkyCable subscribers, regardless of subscription level. Bummer.

At least it's not a total loss - SkyCable are fully aware of the popularity of these channels and have done a little something to try and ease our pain, although it's hard to say for sure if that's enough.

In place of the exiting channels, they've announced the debut of six new channels, namely Balls, AXN Beyond, Kids Co, Fox Crime, Maxxx and Velvet. While they're not perfect replacements for the lost channels, they do present related entertainment value. To sweeten the pot, as it were, they also threw in the Disney Channel, which was previously available only to SkyCable Gold subscribers to be available to all other subscribers as well.

There's no official reason given for the shift in channel line-up from either company - SkyCable just has that measly notice seen above while Solar Entertainment has chosen to use this time to renovate their website. Wonderful. The Wikipedia article about Solar has a note about all this being possibly related to the rights for the Manny Pacquiao fights and such, something that has passed from ABS-CBN (who own SkyCable) over to GMA (their local rival). However, the Wikipedia article about SkyCable adds in the official statement of VP for Programming Juno Chuidian claiming this was just another move to improve programming and reduce redundant channels.

Yeah right.

[Viral Video Chart] November 25 - December 1, 2007

This has been a rather slow week for the Viral Video Chart, at least in the sense that most of the videos I found interesting were also on the chart last week. Still, there are a few videos worth sharing and possibly discussing for now...

First up is the return of Tay Zonday, that kid with the freakishly large voice who made internet stardom with his original song, Chocolate Rain. Now he's back and he's upped his production value with scantily-clad women, rap support and even stupider lyrics. Ugh. Talk about going totally commercial.

#4 - "Cherry Chocolate Rain" Original Song by Tay Zonday

I'm not at all sure why this next music video made the rounds again this month, but then of course I admit it's quite the classic if you're old enough to remember it.

#10 - Quiet Riot - Cum On Feel The Noize

Last but not least is this very unusual but very funny German commercial involving a rather interesting home project.

[Media] There Really Are No Accidents...

Here I am, minding my own business as I got about my weekly trawling of the most popular videos via the Viral Video Chart when I finally took the time to view 19th most popular video for the week.

This is not for the faint of heart:

#19 - prevent-it.ca

I know, right? Now THAT's a powerful message. Apparently it's part of a series of videos released by Canada's Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) as part of their prevent-it.ca movement. They have some pretty shocking commercials all with the same message - we need stronger workplace safety laws and compliance is more than just meeting a requirement.

[Google] Google TV Ads

This video was posted just today on the Official Google Channel over on YouTube - a short advertisement announcing the coming of Google TV Ads.

Oh man, can you imagine the potential of contextual advertising applied to television? Highly targeted commercials based on the program you're viewing now?

It's actually kinda scary...

[Media] The State of Philippine Radio

Flickr: joncheng - tokyo cab

Maybe I'm missing something. You could just say that I'm not a radio person and that I should stick to my computers and my television and just leave radio alone for what it is. Then again, I had my fair share of radio days and I appreciate the medium and I don't think I'm totally clueless when it comes to what makes sense and what doesn't.

Have you seriously listened to Philippine radio recently? Whether in your own vehicle, riding some mode of public transportation or in a cab, you're bound to have heard a bit of it all. The incessant laughter. The horrible jokes. The disturbing voices. Plus the need to repeat stupid catch phrases over and over again.

This is entertainment these days?

You know what I'm talking about right? The likes of Love Radio and such who all have gotten onto this bandwagon of what has become the new radio archetype of sorts. The signs are blatantly obvious.

First the catch phrase / tagline. Whether it's "Kailangan pa bang i-memorize yan?" (rougly, "Do I still need to memorize that?") or that whole "Hi Pangga" routine (and no, I have no idea how to spell it, much less translate it). I hate how they have to repeat those lines over and over again. It doens't make sense to hear it 20 million times in an hour!

Then everyone needs to be laughing. It's not even authentic man-that-was-funny laughter but the kind of fake and forced laughter that sounds more artificial than pre-recorded laugh tracks. It's not just FM radio that has gotten into this pattern - have you heard how some of the news programs on AM radio sound like? The announcer is also getting into the whole forced laughter bit, it just kills me every time. It's terribly annoying! Especially when the news item in question really isn't funny or something to laugh about.

I think what bothers me the most are those jokes they play in-between segments with the disturbing sounding voices right out of a low budget horror movie with killer dwarves. The jokes are normally bad or off-color or tongue-in-cheek or all of the above, really. Then they're followed by the really, really annoying laughter mixes, followed by the station's catch phrase of choice.

Oh, that's is brilliant, isn't it?

And yet they don't stop - it just keeps on going and going and going and sometimes I want to ask the driver to shut the radio off rather than have to listen to that.

How is all this entertaining? Have we become this shallow?

[Viral Video Chart] November 11 - 17, 2007

I've been trying to limit my video posts in favor of more original content that requires less time to load, but with the internet these days, you can never control just how many interesting viral items are making the rounds, best captured by the folks over at the Viral Video Chart.

So here are some of the more interesting videos that topped the chart over the last week that I have yet to post here:

#1 - Android Demo

#3 - Not The Daily Show, With Some Writer

#13 - Bad Day at the office! (HILARIOUS)

#14 - Seth MacFarlane Family Guy 100th Episode Special

[Videos] Scenes From the WGA Strike

With the WGA Strike on-going, many of our favorite shows are at risk of dying the death that plagued Fantasia in The Neverending Story II - Emptiness. Without writers, the plots die, the jokes grow stale and things generally suck.

If you have no idea what they're fighting for, best to check out this informative video:

#2 - Why We Fight

In the meantime, some of the most entertaining shows to watch are the strikers themselves and what they and the actors of many popular TV dramas and sitcoms have to say...

#1 - The Office is Closed

#9 - Lost & Desperate

Sandra Oh: "How greedy can they get???"

Patrick Dempsey: "They WANT the strike!" A tragedy...

[TV] Hollywood Writers' Strike Begins

Flickr: fudj - static 1

by fudj.

As 11th hour negotiations have failed, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) is officially going on strike starting today, November 5, 2007. Most of your typical shows will survive until the end of the year since that content was settled long ago, but the bigger impact to the average viewer is going to be felt in shows that require fresh content daily.

Unless a new agreement can be met, expect things to go down the drain for talk shows like The Tonight Show and The Late Show and even everyone's favorite The Daily Show with John Stewart.

Speculations abound that more than likely, we'll see a sudden increase in reality TV and news programs - some of the few forms of TV content that might survive the WGA strike. The last strike of this kind happened about 20 years ago and that's when new programs became the bread and butter of TV.

Movies will be okay until next year since scripts and screenplays are decided well before but if the strike isn't resolved, things will hiccup towards 2009. Just thinking about the possibility of all my favorite shows like Heroes not being able to complete their storylines next year is just killer.

What exactly is the issue here? Well, the main dispute in the negotiations revolves around getting writers better shares of the profits from new media like DVDs and internet videos, which is already a complicated and muddy mess in just trying to battle video piracy as a whole. Given their issue is pretty complex, I don't see an immediate resolution anytime soon unless the companies negotiating on the other side of the bargaining table take some pretty big risks in order to satisfy the writers.

Oy vei.

[Viral Video Chart] Dove Onslaught

The original Dove Evolution Ad was a refreshing change from the usual kind trash we get from members of the beauty and cosmetics industry. While it was pretty much the strongest video of its kind at the time, it seems Dove wasn't satisfied and decided to up the ante with this much stronger video, which currently tops the Viral Video Chart:

[World Affairs] The Iraq Name Game

Fact: Approximately 3,700 Iraqi civilians are estimated to have been killed last month because of the continuing conflict.

Fact: A large part of the conflict in Iraw (although no all of it) is because of the aggression between the Sunnis and the Shiites.

Fact: The LA Times was the first media agency to adopt the term "civil war" to describe the conflict in Iraw.

Fact: Now most media agencies including NBC, CNN, and Newsweek have also adopted the term "civil war".

So why is it that George "Dubya" Bush refuses to acknowledge this is what's going on in Iraq? I mean come on, we've been "on the verge" and "possibly leading up to" cival war for months now and yethe still thinks this is just additional clean-up work after the Iraw war "finished" with the capture of Saddam Hussein?

It gets worse.

Despite the significant outcry for a change in foreign policy when it comes to Iraq, Dubya has also released a very strong statement that the US will not pull out of Iraq until "the mission is complete" and the "insurgency" is suppressed completely. Then again, I can't help but ask whatever happend to the warm and fuzzy Mission Accomplished photo opportunity? It's pretty much been three years since Bush claimed an end to major combat operations in Iraw and yet still the death toll continues to rise.

Once can only hope that the Democrat-controlled House will be able to do something about all this but it appears Bush is intent on digging his toes into the sand in order to hold his ground on the Iraw issue.

This is going to be an even longer war than anyone ever imagined.
