[Games] Rick and Morty: Total Rickall Card Game Review

Cryptozoic Entertainment has been pretty busy with creating games based on various popular television franchises. And their efforts in support of the ever popular animated series Rick and Morty have resulted in some rather quirky games.

Of course it makes sense that they'd come up with a game based around one of the show's most popular episodes, Total Rickall, which involved the family being locked in the house with memory-altering alien parasites. And how that translated into a game concept is kind of bonkers.

[TV] Rick and Morty: Season 3 Review

It's rather fascinating how Rick and Morty has continued to grow and develop into this amazing piece of culture in these modern times. It's an odd celebration of cultural memes and other pop culture artifacts powered by some crazy writing that manages to remain amazing. It's a show whose writing isn't bound by continuity and yet it demonstrates how to build up characters through crafty use of continuity.

Rick and Morty is a demonstration of what pure intelligence without the limitations of stringent morality or sentiment. This is not to say that Rick is without these things, but he just doesn't allow himself to be limited by them. Figuring out what really matters to him and what drives him is probably a key point to understanding his character and the larger story at work.

This has quickly become one of my favorite  TV experiences and yet I know it's not exactly one that I can readily share and expect universal appeal and appreciation.

[Videos] When Rick and Morty Show Continuity

The Adult Swim animated series Rick and Morty is know for many things including its clever pop culture references, a lot of inappropriate humor and potentially infinite alternate realities. It has become quite well-established that the show's writers are not tightly bound to in-show continuity in order  to allow for more flexibility and creativity in their writing. But despite this general freedom, the show does have a largely consistent narrative woven across the seasons, unless everyone turns out to be clones or alternate universe doppelgangers or whatever.

This Dorkly video nicely highlights a few examples of when the show paid extra attention to its overall continuity in some clever and surprising ways.

[Videos] New and Updated Facts about Rick and Morty

So the third season of Rick and Morty is finally airing properly and not just because of an April Fools Day "leak" situation. And because of that, it's a great time to geek out over the cultural wonder that is this animated series.

Seriously, I love Rick and Morty given how it gets to embrace a different pop culture references across its episodes and yet survives without the obsessive need to maintain narrative continuity. There is a larger storyline and certain events take place after others but the story largely pushes the limits of how things can work. And this has resulted in some crazy yet brilliant stories.

ChannelFrederator has updated their 107 Facts video about the show despite having done two videos before. So to celebrate the return of the show, let's go over them again:

[TV] Rick and Morty Season 3 Promo Ads

Well that escalated quickly.

We went from on-again, off-again speculation about when Rick and Morty would return to Adult Swim for its third season to  a sudden Season 3 premiere on April 1. Wubba lubba dub dub, indeed!

But before the sudden April shower of Rick and Morty upon the world, Adult Swim released a variety of strange, disturbing, crazy, and amazing promos for the show. They range from 8-bit oddities to full-on puppet routines, all with that distinct Rick and Morty flair and irreverence.

Thankfully fellow fans have done their best share these commercial bits over on YouTube.

[Videos] 107 Facts About Adult Swim

When I was growing up, MTV's Liquid Television was one of the most amazing TV shows that I've ever seen and such a strange exploration of the medium of animation. But over time it disappeared and I felt a void in my pop culture heart.

Enter Adult Swim, Cartoon Network's first foray into original programming. It wasn't quite as risque or mind-blowing as Liquid Television, but it was certainly interesting and I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I had eventually fallen in love with shows like Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law and of course Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

So I was pretty happy with Channel Frederator's 107 Facts video for Adult Swim, where most of the video explores a lot of the early shows on the "channel".

[TV] Rick and Morty: Season 2

So I've been sharing a number of Rick and Morty related posts over the past month in line with the growing anticipation for the long-awaited release of the third season of the show. And as is typical of such situations, I realized late that I still hadn't written a review for the second season of the show for one reason or another. Oh well.

My love for Rick and Morty honestly surprised me. It's the sort of show that I thought generally was on the fringes of my interests. But when we finally gave the show, I just got totally sucked in and there was no going back from there.

The show is largely episodic in format and can more or less stand alone. There's some relative degree of overall narrative progression for characters but it's not as strong as what we see in other animated shows like Steven Universe or Adventure Time. And yet the show still has a lot of surprisingly character-focused stories that help push things forward and give you a sense of fulfillment when you see them progress.

[Videos] Rick and Morty After Credits Scenes

Rick and Morty is a totally crazy show but one that has some pretty complex plots that somehow manage to resolve themselves within twenty-something minutes. Beyond all the character deaths, there are also a lot of times when things just end on a totally crazy note and one can't  help but wonder how things are to move forward.

Thankfully, each Rick and Morty episode ends with an after credits sequence that might provide a little bit more closure for you. A YouTube user has conveniently put all the after credits scenes together so enjoy these compilations while they last. Going over it, I realize that I seem to have missed one or two for some reason.

[Videos] Rick and Morty Death Supercuts

It took a while, but I eventually joined the Rick and Morty camp. And across the first two seasons of the show, we've seen a lot of crazy things including strange aliens, ridiculous alternate realities and of course a lot of death. And we're not just talking about random deaths - we've seen many principle characters (or at least versions thereof) die time and time again.

And for some reason, Adult Swim UK has put together two crazy supercut videos that cover all the deaths in each of the seasons.

Enjoy.

[Videos] 107 More Facts About Rick and Morty

While we all wait for the third season of the ever crazy Rick and Morty animated series, ChannelFrederator seems intent on keeping us busy with another of their 107 Facts videos, which I rather enjoy. If you missed the first one, you can check out this link. Otherwise, on with the facts!

[TV] Rick and Morty: Season 1

I've enjoyed my share of strange and unusual cartoons. I totally bought into the concept behind Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and have always been eager to see what they have to offer. The segment has never seen full release here in Asia, although we have had snippets that included shows like Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. But beyond that, we've had pretty slim pickings.

So I heard about Rick and Morty only recently as more and more friends seem to be talking about it plus it was featured as the subject of a PBS Idea Channel episode. And quite frankly, I trust Idea Channel enough to act as a recommendation for elements of pop culture worth experiencing.

And man, the show is naturally crazy, and is the case of most Adult Swim cartoons. But it's also one that keeps a single foot in the realm of science while the rest of it is off exploring the wonders of some pretty novel storytelling.

[TV] The Venture Bros: Season 2

Continuing my adventures following The Venture Bros., we're now on the second season of the show for today's review. The first season wasn't necessarily all that coherent (which is part of the show's charm), but that still didn't stop it from getting to another season. And as with many other shows, this also presented an opportunity for the writers to actually start to expand on the character back stories and flesh things out even further.

This is not to say that the show suddenly evolved into a serious adventure cartoon or something like that. As much as characters have had a chance to develop, they continue to be highly damaged and whose sanity may often be in question given their life choices. But it's the craziness that helps make everything so much fun on a number of levels.

I appreciated the fact that we got a lot more focus on The Monarch as compared to other villains. A revolving line-up of baddies can be pretty fun, but the show really needed to give us more Monarch. And in turn, we also got more exposure to his rather unusual henchmen.

[TV] G.I. Joe: Resolute (2009)

As a child of the 80's, I was never really a big fan of G.I. Joe. I mean seriously, it was generally cool and all but my line of interests was always drawn more towards robots and all things mechanical. Thus the only attraction for the series for me personally was the vehicles, but only to a limited degree. Heck, I think I liked the vehicles in Inhumanoids more than G.I. Joe.

This is not to say I didn't find many a boring afternoon stuck with nothing else on TV. So I learned that Cobra Commander sounded a lot like Starscream and despite being in the military, G.I. Joe did not wear standard uniforms. Oh, and wrestlers like Sgt. Slaughter get to be in the show too.

The movie was pretty interesting too, especially that "Cobra La" battle cry, but beyond that I never really got it. There were all these big battles, an insanely large roster of heroes and villains and despite the prolific use of laser weapons, no one ever died. Yeah, that's Saturday morning television for you right there.

Fast forward to 2009 and Cartoon Network comes out with G.I. Joe: Resolute under their Adult Swim brand of cartoons targeted at older audiences. Written by that mad genius Warren Ellis and with a really cool sneak peak trailer at a prior Comic Con and you end up with some major buzz for an update of an 80's animated classic.

The premise is pretty simple - imagine a world with G.I. without the insane lasers that turn their battles into laser tag. Tone down the garish colors of their costumes. Try to make things a little more realistic in terms of current military technology. Take the original characters but have someone who has never seen the original cartoon have fun with them. There you go.

The series has some amazing stuff for die-hard fans. You'll see familiar characters updated to be a lot more bad ass. You have a Cobra Commander who isn't a total idiot. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow getting all ninja wicked on each other. You even get classic tie-ups like The Baroness and Destro still in each others arms. Awww, yeah, we can all get sentimental about stuff like that. Plus despite the loss of laser guns, they still had their share of insane super weapons. It makes you almost miss Destro's Weather Dominator.

But there are things core fans are going to miss. Whatever happened to the twins Tomax and Xomat and Dr. Mindbender? Since we had Duke, where was Lady Jaye and why wasn't she getting it on with Scarlett? And why didn't they EVER shout "YO JOE!!!"

Still, it's a great "re-imagining" of the series, even if you are getting sick of that term for "retcon" or "reboot", but it's the signs of the times. It could have been much worse. Still, it was a pretty daring initiative and some characters actually...*gasps*...DIE, although not as many as I was hoping for.

You should definitely get out there and try to catch the series if you get the US edition of Adult Swim. If not, there are webisodes. If not even that, well, this is the internet. Go figure.

[Digg] Robot Chicken - 1776 Spoof on 300

Digg is one of the many ways I try to comb the web for the latest and the greatest to be used as features here on the Geeky Guide. Given how the social bookmarking / voting service has grown over time, it's no longer just about interesting websites but also images and videos.

Currently #1 today on Digg is this funny video taken from those crazy guys over at Robot Chicken. This time around, they're feeling a little patriotic...

EDIT: As expected, the video got pulled pretty quickly. Darn.

[Videos] Robot Chicken - Top 10 Star Wars Special Clips

One of my biggest gripes with the Cartoon Network here in Asia is that we don't get the insanely funny Robot Chicken series here. This was made worse when Robot Chicken ran a Star Wars special.

Apparently there was a call for a vote over on Adult Swim and they came up with the Top Ten Star Wars clips from the special episode. Way Cool!
