Image via Wikipedia Harvey Milk is known in history as the first openly gay man to be elected to any substantial public office in the world, at least according to TIME Magazine. Whether or not he's actually the first doesn't really matter. What's more important is what he stands for to gay rights activists everywhere.

He was eventually assasinated in 1978 and all the more was made famous by this quote:

If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door

Now director Gus Van Sant, more famous for movies like Good Will Hunting, has helmed the filming of a biographical account of Milk's life entitled "Milk" with Sean Penn playing the title role.

Milk is scheduled for release in the US on Deceber 5, 2008.
