As corny and cheesy the original cartoon series was, I have to admit I was a sucker for Speed Racer. The tricked out cars, the unforgettable theme song and yes, even the stupid monkey.

When they first announced the new movie based on this classic cartoon, I was a bit worried about what they'd do with it. Sure, it's the same guys who brought us the Matrix Trilogy, but then that doesn't mean anything really. Or does it? Then I saw the trailer and clearly they're trying to recapture some of the feel from the original while retaining the ability to stand back and laugh at the whole series and not turn it into a boring, ultra-realistic version of the original.

Projected US release date is May 9, 2008.
