[Geekdom] Star Wars vs Star Trek

Pardon my lack of updates - as I mentioned in a prior post, I'm still transitioning between internet service providers after my move and thus I don't consistently have a direct connection to the internet beyond work. I'm only able to update now because of the generosity of nearby friends with extra laptops and sufficiently strong enough WiFi, hehe.

This video has been going around the web in recent weeks and it's a pretty good mash-up of what would happen if the forces of Star Wars would come up against the likes of the Enterprise D from Star Trek. While I'm sure die-hard fans of both fandoms are bound to find something to complain about in terms of this video, you can't help but enjoy the whole thing for what it's meant to represent.

Enjoy!

[Geeky Guide] Temporary Hiatus

Hello fellow geeks!

For those of you who've been wondering what's been happening lately in terms of why I haven't been posting updates as much as I used to, here's the post where I get to explain what's going on.

Man that was a long sentence.

Anyway, I just moved to a new flat over the weekend and naturally the week has been filled with post-moving activities and naturally my "day" job as a product training manager for a US-based call center. I'm still in-between ISPs and trying to find a new one as soon as possible, but I should get that resolved no later than the end of next week. By then we'll resume normal update cycles.

In case you're determined to read about what's been going on in my personal life (which is still geeky, mind you), then feel free to visit my personal blog, Beyond Dinobot Island - I try to keep this updated daily, at least while I'm at work. Like now.

Stay geeky!

[CollegeHumor] The Matrix Runs on Windows

The boys and girls at CollegeHumor came up with another gem of a video with this piece that asks the question: What would the Matrix be like if it ran on Windows? As if spoofing Keanu's forever deadpan acting wasn't potentially funny enough, throwing in all the usual complications and hijinks that come with the MS Windows operating systems in all their variations was just too much!

Whoa indeed.

[Viral Video Chart] Toshiba Timesculpture Ad

I definitely believe that most of the truly creative and innovative minds on the planet are involved in the world of advertising. They're not involved in scientific research and not even fields like writing or publishing. Oh no, they're definitely in advertising.

How else can we even hope to explain the creative genius (or lunacy) needed to come up with such a dynamic advertisement like this one from Toshiba? I swear, it just totally blew me away when I first viewed it. How do people come up with stuff like this?

[Gay Rights] Keith Olbermann on CA Proposition 8

Cropped headshot of Keith OlbermannImage via WikipediaI've never really been that big a fan of MSNBC's Keith Olbermann. He has a lot of good commentary out there while at times he can also get very cheesy and over the top. Then again, that kind of subjectivity can be seen in almost every reporter or newscaster at one point in time or another.

However this video quickly hit the top of the Viral Video Chart and it's pretty powerful - Olbermann makes a very strong statement about California Proposition 8 and what it means to the world that majority of the voters in the state of California voted again the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Powerful stuff indeed.

[Web 2.0] The Security of the Cloud

Mi sistema GTD en Google DocsImage by Francesc Esteve via FlickrSome of you may have noticed a significant drop in my posting frequency here at the Geeky Guide. Initially it was related to increased work load in terms of my "day job" as a Product Training Manager for a call center here in Manila, Philippines. Eventually things got worse when someone broke into our apartment about two weeks ago and stole my laptop and my Sony DSC-H50 digital camera. Thus I lost my primary way of updating this blog and have fallen back to sharing computer time via my partner's desktop. Major bummer, I know.

After the initial shock about the theft had past and I started to sit down and figure out how much of my personal data may be at risk should the burglars get past my Windows password, I realized that I wasn't in too bad a situation. While there were still a few work-related files that I had stored on the computer, most of what had been lost consisted of music downloads, comic scans and a ridiculous amount of, well, video content potentially of the adult variety.

What had saved me from potential identify theft was actually my decision to migrate many of my files online and embrace the .

I never considered getting into cloud computing because of notions of security. Frankly, it all started with my interest in the novelty of Google Docs and the need to work off multiple computers. I can get pretty obsessive about how I manage our finances at home and thus I like being able to work on my personal ledgers, expense trackers and budget calculators whether I'm at home or at work. Thus I opted to try learning how to work using online office suites like Google Docs in order to maximize the benefits given my personal needs.

As time progressed and Google added more and more spreadsheet functions to Docs, it became truly feasible for me to migrate all data off my laptop and my desktops into the "cloud" as it were and work in a completely online mode. I already had a broadband connection at home and thus there was really nothing much stopping me.

While cloud computing is not for everyone depending on the complexity of your needs and how comfortable you are with the slower responsiveness certain online applications have, it has worked fairly well for me and I encountered no major issues once I had migrated. Google Docs makes it easy to export data back into the usual office formats or even PDFs in order to exchange information with other users and have people take advantage of what I've put together. I've also gotten other friends to access my online spreadsheets and files whether via public links or email invites and thus it's pretty much worked out okay.

Thus when I assessed the personal damage the theft of my laptop presented, my first priority became changing all of my online passwords, which I regularly change every 30 days anyway. With my passwords changed and all my files online, the loss of something typically overflowing with personal information like my laptop ended up being a rather expensive annoyance that involved minimal risk on my part.

Yeah, I guess I really am convinecd of the benefits of cloud computing for users like myself. This may or may not work for you as a reason to come on "up" into the virtual cloud, but I'm sure there are others who might share similar stories. Let this one be yet another one joining the crowd.

[Comics] Annihilation: Conquest - Quasar

Annihilation: Conquest - QuasarThe events covered in the limited series Annihilation were pretty significant in their own right and the series certainly did a lot to help characters like Nova come back into the foreground of the Marvel Universe.

One the the characters given new life was Quasar, although instead of the continuing adventures of Wendell Vaughn, the mantle of Protector of the Universe has been passed on to Phyla-Vell, who is also the current Captain Marvel. It seems a slightly cheap shot to combine these two heroes into one character, and a female one at that but then for the most part she is rather interesting.

Oh, and she's a lesbian, too. Put your tongues back into your mouths boys, or you'll be playing right into Marvel's hands.

Phyla-VellImage via WikipediaConquest: Annihilation - Quasar is one of three limited series that lead up to the Conquest: Annihilation mini-series. In the same treatment as how they prepared for the original Annihilation, Marvel opted to follow the same formula, except for having the fourth series to be issues from the on-going Nova comics instead.

In this segment, the story mostly deals with Phyla-Vell trying to come to grips with her powers as both Quasar and as Captain Marvel. The Quasar mantle has her needing to be responsible to the welfare of the universe at large while her being Captain Marvel has certain responsibilities towards her people, the Kree as well. She's accompanied by Moondragon, who is now her lover, and together the two find themselves on a quest of sorts given a mysterious voice that only Phyla-Vell can hear calling out to her.

The story development behind this particular piece was fairly well done although it still didn't quite hook me. I liked how they tried to limit her Quasar abilities given the situation with the Phalanx sealing off Kree Space from the rest of the galaxy, but somehow it also limited the potential for the story to go anywhere truly exciting or to have some pretty kick ass battles. Instead the whole run had that whole "Survivor" feel with supplies being very limited.

Moondragon certainly made for an interesting companion to Phyla-Vell given the whole lesbian spin, although their relationship doesn't really come out to me as being all that genuine / authentic. I don't quite know why, but the whole thing just seemed a tad flat / hollow to me.

Still, it's a fairly interesting piece and important enough in order to fully understand the later events in Annihilation: Conquest, so it's still worth the time pick up the book, or at least acquire a copy of it for some quality reading time.

[US Elections] Obama Won!

US Senator Barack Obama campaigning in New Ham...Image via WikipediaBarrack Hussein Obama is officially the 44th President of the United States of America after CNN and the other networks called it and John McCain conceded defeat.

We have a Democrat back in control of the White House! We finally have a member of an ethnic minority as President of the US! Man, if only he were gay, then we'd have it all!

What else is there to say? Hip hip, hurrah!

And thank god they didn't let Palin into the White House!

[Gay Rights] Vote NO to Proposition 8

The stakes in CaliforniaImage by bobster1985 via FlickrTomorrow is November 4, 2008 in the US, also known as Election Day. While it is the day the Obama-McCain contest will finally be decided and a new US President will be declared, it's also a very important day for gays and lesbians across America and even around the world. Let's face it, despite the current economic woes, many countries look to superpowers like the US as a model for democracy and how laws should be defined. To have even a single state in the US make such a stark stance for or against GLBT rights will mean a lot for governments around the world.

For those who tuned in late, California Proposition 8 entitled Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry is a measure attempting to amend the California state constitution with the statement "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." This would run counter to the recent California Supreme Court ruling stating that Proposition 22, which added a definition to the California State Family Code that marriage is the union between as a man and a woman, was in violation of the equal protection clause in the state constitution.

Yeah, it's pretty bad.

If this measure gets pushed, this will be the first time a state will take such a strong stance against GLBT rights by making such unions unconstitutional. The constitution, whether on a state or a national level is practically a sacred thing when it comes to government. It's the very basis for all other laws and it defines the guiding principles for that government in terms of how the laws can be formed. To set in stone that same-sex couples should be denied the right to marry will impact more than just the estimated 16,000 couples who have been married in the state of California. It affects us all and will send ripples through the minds of citizens all over the US and eventually the world whether straight or gay.

In case you tuned in really, really late, I am an out and proud gay man. I don't suffer from limp wrists nor do I speak in a falsetto tone. I don't wear dresses nor do I see anything wrong in any of these things - they just aren't me. If your image of what constitutes a gay man or woman is just in the realm of stereotypes, that's just unfair. It's even worse if you make decisions like what to vote on such measures on a ballot is just inhumane and cruel.

We live in a world of infinite diversity and human nature is what drives that. You can be whoever you want to be and whatever you want to be as long as you don't harm others. Allowing two men or two women to get a piece of paper that says they're married and all the rights that come with that document doesn't hurt anyone - it just allows the same rights and privileges to other people who live normal lives, work to earn a living and have their own dreams of starting a family. It's one thing to vote on a measure that protects others against harm - to vote on a measure that takes rights away from others for no really valid reason is just cruel and vile and just plain wrong.

I'm a gay geek and I'm proud of both words in that term. But neither term alone defines who or what I am - a person is a lot more than a label. When you talk about me, you're talking about the sum total of my life experiences thus far and everything I've ever said, thought or done. It's also everything that I might do in the future and what I might accomplish. You don't get to judge me based on a stereotype or a notion or even just an inkling of who and what I am. Even more, you don't get to deny me my rights and take them away.

I may not live in the US anymore, but I share the concerns that every other gay man or lesbian or whatever else is affected by Proposition 8 feels right now. You don't own marriage just because you're heterosexual and your religious denomination has a sacrament called marriage - that's why there are civil marriages and church marriages. Sure, religions get to decide who or what gets to be married and thus some churches support polygamy while others require monogamy. That's none of my business. But civil marriages are defined by the government and laws are supposed to be decided without religious bias. That's why there's a separation between Church and State!

Tomorrow you're voting about more than just a stereotype or what makes you feel "comfortable" based on your sensibilities or your upbringing or whatever you learned in Sunday school. You're voting about the lives and futures of thousands of same-sex couples in the state of California and thousands more across the country and around the world. You're voting on whether or not it's okay with you to take someone's rights away. Today it's just the right to marriage, but who knows what else might be next.

We live in a world where people get to vote regardless of gender and people get to marry regardless of race or color. Why is it so hard to make the same consideration for homosexuals?

Think about all this when you cast your vote tomorrow Californians. Think about the lives you're going to change with this one vote. Vote responsibly and in consideration of human rights and the fundamental rights of all people, man, woman, gay, lesbian, or whatever else is out there in this wonderfully diverse world.

Vote NO tomorrow on Proposition 8! Vote NO to discrimination!

[US Elections] Canadians Prank Sarah Palin

I don't know how authentic this is, but either way it's a really funny concept which just gets even better if it really happened.

To top it all of, it was Canadians who did it! Yeah man!
