Most people probably don't care about particle accelerators in general and the awareness that such massive complexes existed only really became popular because of the creation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It's not that this particular particle accelerator was particularly interesting to the non-scientific community due to it's sheer technical potential, but more because of stupid internet memes / email chains that tried to scare everyone with the potential end of the world as we know it.
Yeah, it was right up there with the moon crashing into the planet and potentially earth-shattering earthquakes.
On a much lighter note, though, there was also this particular video that's been making the rounds of the internet for some time now that helps explain what the LHC really is in more, um, conventional terms. Well, conventional if you speak rap, that is.
