[Technicolor Musings] Celebrate Love!

In a few days, it's going to be Valentine's Day. And as much as we can argue well into the wee hours of the morning about how this holiday is more likely the product of greeting card companies and that sort of thing, it's still a day that many people around the world take the time to recognize and celebrate. Like all other holidays, it's a day meant to be spent commemorating a particular event or concept, in this case the wonders of love.

It's far too easy to use this holiday as a time to lament one being single or any past relationships that suddenly return to the forefront of your memories. Don't fall into that humbug trap! Instead, why not focus on the positive and find something to be happy about today? Believe me, finding reasons to be happy in life will do a lot for your general sense of well-being. Plus some say that it'll even help you live longer.

So here are a few quick reminders for your Valentine's Day. At least off the top of my head.

For Those In Relationships:

Spend some quality time with your loved one/s. It doesn't have to be some big fancy date at an exclusive restaurant or anything like that. Instead, focus on what you know about one another and find ways to celebrate those passions you share. It could mean watching a beloved movie together. Or maybe just enjoying a home-cooked meal that the two of you worked on together. The important thing is to find ways to be together and just try to bond more and strengthen the connections between you.

And yes, it could also mean going out to some bar together, provided your the types of folks who can actually spend time together in a bar instead of going off your separate ways cruising. I'm not trying to be against open relationships here - I'm just saying on this special day, try to focus on your "official" partner.

For Those Who Are Single:

Have fun with your friends! Instead of throwing a pity party when you all lament past loves and broken relationships, why not celebrate what you love about, well, love and relationships. Share funny stories about how you met previous boyfriends or talk about crazy pick-up lines you've tried out. The point is, focus on the good and what makes love and being committed so amazing. It'll be a good reminder for you and you friends about what makes love great and why it's important not to lose hope or give up on finding it. You'll find your love out there as long as you remain open to it.

You could also use the day to celebrate a personal passion or something else that you love. I know, I know, it's not exactly romantic love, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't be happy or proud of how you feel about writing, reading books, practicing martial arts or having pets. Enjoying the things that you love the most is certainly a better way of spending the day instead of moping around at home all day.

As for us, well, we already spent an amazing weekend together at Clark, Pampanga for the 17th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. And while that could be counted as our big event for this particular holiday, we still have plans of sharing a lovely dinner at home despite our busy and rather different schedules.

And as always, you can read more about how we celebrate love even beyond Valentine's Day over at Baduy Pride.
