TL;DR: FOUR THINGS
- Hook: Sudoku-style spatial puzzle; draft translucent dice to construct stained-glass windows. - Teacher’s Note: Enforce adjacency restrictions; emphasize personal scoring conditions, rare tool manipulation. - Logistics: Gorgeous translucent dice; compact individual player boards require modest table footprint. - Verdict: Outstanding modern classic; delivers tight, rewarding spatial optimization every session.
Sagrada
Official Description:
As a master artisan, you will create a stained glass window in the Sagrada Familia. Each player builds a stained glass window by building up a grid of dice on their player board. Each board has some restrictions on which color or shade (value) of die can be placed there. Dice of the same color or shade may never be placed next to each other. Dice are drafted in player order, with the start player rotating each round, snaking back around after the last player drafts two dice. Scoring is variable based on achieving various patterns and varieties of placement, as well as bonus points for dark glass energy tokens unused. Special tools can be used to help you break the rules by spending skill tokens; once a tool is used, it then requires more skill tokens for the next player to use them. The highest scoring window artisan wins!
Sagrada now counts as a legacy Euro-style engine, it challenges players to draft translucent dice and construct intricate stained-glass windows, reminiscent of a Sudoku-style puzzle. The game's operational reliability is evident in its consistent mechanical performance, making it a reliable secondary option for seasoned curators. Its legacy status is well-earned, reflecting years of shelf competition and continued relevance in the rotation. The game's ability to enforce adjacency restrictions and emphasize personal scoring conditions ensures a rewarding experience for those who appreciate strategic depth. From a hosting perspective, Sagrada is a compact yet visually striking addition to any game night. The gorgeous translucent dice and individual player boards require minimal table space, making it a table-ready option that can be set up in about 15 minutes. With a session time of 45 minutes, it fits comfortably as a main event or a substantial interlude between heavier games. Its modest footprint and engaging gameplay make it an attractive choice for hosts looking to offer a visually appealing and intellectually stimulating experience. Teaching Sagrada involves a procedural approach, requiring about 20 minutes to cover the rules and nuances. The game's parallel play nature allows for low interaction, maintaining a calm yet focused atmosphere. Players will benefit from the skill dividend of enhanced spatial visualization, as the board performs a sharp audit of their ability to manage space and patterns. Once the initial teaching phase is complete, the system allows facilitators to step back, letting players immerse themselves in the challenge of optimizing their stained-glass masterpieces.
