Hanami
Official Description:
Pack your bento box, grab your picnic blanket, and find the perfect spot under the treetops. The sakura blossoms are in full bloom and people from all over are gathered in the park for Hanami (or "flower viewing"), a centuries-old Japanese springtime tradition. In Hanami, you'll be picnicking in parks all across Japan and Tokyo City in the springtime, fighting the crowds to celebrate the floral spectacle. Players take turns placing tiles on the board to reserve spots near the various activities found throughout the park. Each tile represents a picnic blanket set out by a member of your group to claim a spot. Tiles indicate the strength of your group via the number of pips, as well as the group's favored activity, such as viewing sakura, eating onigiri, or spending an evening under the lanterns. You'll collect Activity Tokens once they are surrounded by player tiles, provided your tiles have a higher strength than any other player's. Victory Tokens are earned at the end of the game for each activity by having the most of the corresponding Activity Token, and the player with the most Victory Tokens wins the game. Hanami is a bold new reimagining of the classic game Samurai, designed by Dr. Reiner Knizia. This updated version tells a new story of relaxing picnic lunches among the cherry blossoms and paper lanterns of Tokyo City parks or the lush countryside of Japan. It introduces new strategies and two distinct ways to play: the Japan map allows players to enjoy the classic Samurai ruleset, while the Tokyo setup provides new challenges, unique abilities, and new tiles.
Hanami, a reimagining of the classic Samurai by Dr. Reiner Knizia, offers a serene yet intense spatial tile-laying experience. This redesign blends the strategic depth of majority bidding with a visually stunning presentation, making it a reliable secondary option for seasoned gamers. The game's competitive nature is masked by its tranquil theme of picnicking under cherry blossoms, but the underlying mechanics demand sharp tactical decisions. As a new addition to the collection, Hanami's current momentum reflects its potential for consistent mechanical performance, appealing to those who appreciate a blend of strategy and aesthetics. The deluxe Kickstarter edition of Hanami boasts outstanding production value, ensuring a captivating table presence. With a setup time of around 15 minutes, it fits comfortably into a game night as a main event, offering a full hour of engaging play. The components are well-crafted, enhancing the overall experience without overwhelming the players. Its table-ready nature makes it an attractive choice for hosts looking to impress their guests with both visual appeal and strategic depth. Teaching Hanami involves a procedural approach, requiring about 20 minutes to cover the rules thoroughly. The game's competitive dynamics keep players engaged, fostering a lively atmosphere as they vie for dominance on the board. The skill dividend here lies in mastering the art of majority tracking and strategic placement, which can elevate a player's tactical acumen. While the game demands attention, its structured flow allows the facilitator to step back once the core mechanics are understood, letting the players immerse themselves in the strategic dance of claiming victory tokens.
