Guillotine
Official Description:
The French Revolution is famous in part for the use of the guillotine to put nobles to death, and this is the macabre subject of this light card game. As executioners pandering to the masses, the players are trying to behead the most popular nobles. Each day the nobles are lined up and players take turns killing the ones at the front of the line until all the nobles are gone. However, players are given cards which will manipulate the line order right before 'harvesting' heads, which is what makes the game interesting. After three days of chopping, the highest total carries the day.
As a classic line-manipulation card game, Guillotoine offers reliable secondary option performance within the collection. The system operates on a straightforward cycle where players draft specific scoring cards by altering a shared central row. Despite the macabre dressing of the theme, the actual table experience is surprisingly lighthearted, demanding sharp sequential planning as players juggle variable action cards to shift the queue in their favor. It survives in the rotation because it reliably tests a group’s ability to quickly evaluate shifting priorities and manage sudden disruptions to the board state.
Opening the box is practically the setup, making this a highly efficient tool for managing a multi-table event. It functions perfectly as a gap-filler while waiting for larger groups to arrive or as a quick diversion between heavier strategic sessions. The logistics are mostly smooth, anchored by whimsical cartoon artwork that softens the setting, though the compact carton does lack the necessary clearance if you prefer to keep your decks sleeved. You can deploy it quickly, but you will need to find alternative storage if card protection is a priority for your library.
The teaching curve is comfortable by round two, making it easy to hand off to newer players once the core draft-and-collect cycle is understood. The real skill dividend comes from mastering the timing of the action cards, forcing players to develop strong risk-assessment and tactical sequencing capabilities on the fly. Because the interaction leans competitive with a healthy dose of indirect blocking, the energy in the room stays lively as players constantly undo each other's carefully planned lineups. It requires very little oversight from the host, allowing you to step away and manage other tables while the group sorts out their queue.
