Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure
Official Description:
Burgle your way to adventure in Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure. Sneak into an angry dragon’s mountain lair to steal precious artifacts. Delve deeper to find more valuable loot, but be careful—the deeper you go, the more noise you make, and the more likely you are to draw the dragon’s attention.
Players build their own decks as they play, acquiring cards that grant movement, skill, and combat abilities. These cards help you navigate the dungeon, fight monsters, and acquire new cards for your deck. However, some cards also generate “Clank!”—a representation of the noise you make, which increases your risk of attracting the dragon’s wrath.
To win, you must escape the dungeon with your life and the most valuable artifacts. If you take too many wounds from the dragon, you may not make it out at all. The game combines deck-building strategy with a push-your-luck element, as players must decide how deep to venture and when to make their escape.
Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure operates at the intersection of push-your-luck tension and modular deck construction, channeling the spirit of classic dungeon-crawlers while layering in a modern card-driven engine. The system’s tactical core is a calculated risk: every card you add to your deck is a tool for movement, combat, or loot, but also a potential liability as noise accumulates and the dragon’s threat escalates. The board’s spatial puzzle—navigating the crystal caverns and timing your escape—demands a sharp audit of player intent, especially as indirect interaction spikes when aggressive moves trigger dragon attacks. This is a title with high operational reliability; its current momentum is no accident. Years of managing tables have shown that Clank! consistently delivers a top-tier strategic dividend, with shelf retention driven by its ability to generate laughter, tension, and memorable reversals in every session.
From a logistics standpoint, Clank! arrives in a large box with ample expansion space, making it a substantial presence on any shelf. Setup is straightforward but not instant—expect about 15 minutes to get the board, cards, and components in order, especially if you’re integrating expansions. The playful art and tongue-in-cheek card references keep the mood light, even as the stakes rise. With a 60-minute runtime, Clank! is best positioned as a main event for the evening, offering enough depth and chaos to satisfy a full table without overstaying its welcome. The physical footprint is justified by the replay value and the ease with which it accommodates both new and returning players.
Teaching Clank! is a procedural affair: expect to spend a focused 20 minutes on the initial rules, particularly clarifying how movement through the crystal caverns works and when the endgame triggers as players make their escape. Once underway, the system’s parallel play structure means you can step back and let the table run itself, intervening only for edge cases or dragon attacks. The primary skill dividend here is risk assessment—players quickly learn to balance greed against survival, reading both the board and their opponents’ intentions. The indirect interaction keeps the energy high, as every decision has the potential to shift the group dynamic from cautious optimism to gleeful chaos in a single turn.
