Clank! Expeditions: Gold and Silk
Official Description:
Clank! Expeditions: Gold and Silk is an expansion for the deck-building adventure game Clank! that introduces a series of new boards to continue your adventures. This expansion features two unique maps: "Gold Mine" and "Spider Queen's Lair." In the Gold Mine, players explore a mine abandoned by the Ruin Dwarven Mining Company, where they can collect gold nuggets and use mine carts to traverse the tunnels. The Spider Queen's Lair challenges players to navigate webs and face the dangers of the lair, adding new obstacles and opportunities for treasure.
Each map in Gold and Silk offers distinct gameplay twists and thematic elements, enhancing replayability and strategic depth. The Gold Mine map emphasizes resource collection and movement efficiency, while the Spider Queen's Lair introduces web tokens and a new layer of risk and reward. Both maps require players to adapt their strategies to the unique challenges presented by the environments.
This expansion is designed for use with the base Clank! game and is not a standalone product. It provides fresh content for experienced players, expanding the world of Clank! with new adventures, mechanics, and thematic experiences.
Gold and Silk extends the Clank! system with two new boards that each demand a different tactical approach. The mining map leans into resource optimization and movement planning, rewarding players who can efficiently navigate tunnels and maximize gold collection. The spider queen’s lair, on the other hand, introduces a layer of environmental hazard management—web tokens and lair-specific threats force players to weigh risk against reward with every move. Both maps reinforce Clank!’s lineage as a modular, deck-driven dungeon crawl, but the spider queen’s lair stands out for its memorable tension and thematic punch. After years of managing tables, I see this expansion as a solid table-time value: it doesn’t overhaul the core system, but it does inject enough variety to keep Clank! sessions fresh for groups who already know the base game well.
Physically, Gold and Silk is not the most storage-friendly addition. The expansion comes in a clamshell blister pack that resists easy shelving and is best consolidated into the main Clank! box or a custom insert. Setup remains in the 15-minute range, so it’s practical for a standard-length session, but not something you’ll want to slot in as a quick filler. For hosts, this is a mid-evening feature—enough meat for a focused hour, but not so sprawling that it derails the rest of the night. The component quality is consistent with the base game, but the packaging is a minor hurdle for those who value streamlined storage.
Teaching Gold and Silk is a procedural affair. The mining map is straightforward for returning players, but the spider queen’s lair requires a clear walkthrough of web-clearing and lair-specific mechanics before play begins. Once underway, the parallel play structure means you can step back as a facilitator—players are mostly managing their own routes and risks, with minimal direct interference. The main skill dividend here is in adaptive planning: players must read the board, anticipate choke points, and pivot strategies as new obstacles emerge. The interaction level keeps the room focused but not combative, making it a reliable choice for groups who prefer individual optimization over direct conflict.
