Barbecubes
Official Description:
The BBQ's hot, and it's time to prep the food for cooking, but don't spill on the grill or everyone will go hungry! In Barbecubes, players take turns drawing a card, grabbing food with tongs, and carefully placing it on the grill. The challenge is to balance the food items without causing any to fall off.
Each turn, a player draws a card that shows a specific food item to be placed on the grill. Using the included tongs, the player must pick up the corresponding food piece and add it to the grill. If any food falls off during this process, the player keeps the card as a penalty. Accumulating too many penalty cards can lead to elimination from the game.
Barbecubes is a dexterity game designed for quick, lighthearted play. It is suitable as a warm-up activity or for playing with less experienced gamers. The game is portable and lightweight, making it easy to bring to gatherings or events.
Barbecubes sits comfortably within the casual dexterity lineage—quick to deploy, easy to explain, and always good for a round of laughs. Its compact tin is loaded with wooden food tokens and cards, making it a reliable secondary option for groups that want a break from heavier fare. The game’s current value comes from its consistent mechanical performance: it’s light enough to see regular play, but not so sticky that it overstays its welcome. For a collection that cycles through dozens of fillers, Barbecubes earns its spot by delivering a steady stream of fast, competitive sessions that keep the table moving.
Component-wise, the game is built for portability and speed. The small tin is genuinely travel-friendly, but the abundance of chunky wooden tokens means setup is instant—just open and play. However, the pixel-art finish on the pieces can make them slippery, especially when using the included tongs, which adds a layer of physical challenge that’s both a feature and a minor frustration. With a 15-minute session time, Barbecubes is best deployed as a warm-up or a between-games palate cleanser, not as a main event. It’s the kind of box you toss into a bag for conventions or casual nights, knowing it’ll fill gaps without fuss.
From a teaching perspective, Barbecubes is a breeze. The rules are light: draw a card, pick up the matching food with tongs, and add it to the grill—fail, and you take a penalty. This simplicity means you can introduce it in under two minutes and step away without worrying about rules confusion. The main skill dividend is the mental friction of spatial visualization and fine motor control, as players must judge angles and balance under pressure. The competitive format keeps the energy high, with each turn inviting groans and cheers as food inevitably tumbles. For hosts, it’s a low-maintenance, high-laughter option that reliably resets the room’s mood.
