Wyrmspan
Official Description:
In the world of Wyrmspan, players take on the role of amateur dracologists who have recently unearthed a hidden labyrinth on their land. The primary objective is to excavate this subterranean network and entice a diverse array of dragons—varying in shape, size, and color—to roost within the sanctuary of these newly discovered caves.
During gameplay, participants build a sanctuary starting with three initial excavated spaces: the leftmost areas of the Crimson Cavern, the Golden Grotto, and the Amethyst Abyss. As the game progresses, players must excavate additional spaces to accommodate more dragons, allowing them to chain together powerful abilities and earn the prestigious favor of the Dragon Guild.
While Wyrmspan is inspired by the core mechanisms of the award-winning game Wingspan, it features unique elements that establish it as a standalone experience. Consequently, Wyrmspan is not compatible with Wingspan components, offering a distinct strategic challenge centered on draconic habitat management and engine-building.
Wyrmspan stands out as a compelling evolution in the realm of fantasy engine-builders, seamlessly integrating bird-drafting mechanisms into the intricate task of developing a subterranean dragon sanctuary. This game offers a distinct strategic challenge, requiring players to meticulously manage draconic habitats while navigating the complexities of excavation sequences. The prerequisite cave cards add a layer of tactical depth, ensuring that each decision is both meaningful and impactful. With its outstanding spatial evolution and unique resource loops, Wyrmspan surpasses expectations, offering consistent mechanical performance that justifies its high velocity in the current rotation.
From a hosting perspective, Wyrmspan's gorgeous artwork is a visual treat, though the mismatched board sizes can complicate custom storage solutions. The inclusion of a superfluous guide may add to the setup time, but once on the table, the game is a solid centerpiece for a game night, with its 90-minute session time providing a substantial yet manageable experience. While not a quick filler, it serves as an engaging main event, rewarding players with its rich thematic depth and strategic complexity.
Teaching Wyrmspan requires a veteran lead due to its technical nature, but the effort is well worth it. The competitive interaction keeps players engaged, fostering a dynamic atmosphere that enhances the room's energy. As players delve into the game's strategic planning, they gain a valuable skill dividend, honing their ability to anticipate and adapt to evolving scenarios. While the game's complexity demands attention, the satisfaction of mastering its intricacies allows for moments where the facilitator can step back, letting the players immerse themselves in the draconic world they've helped create.
