The Isle of Cats
Official Description:
The Isle of Cats is a competitive, medium-weight, card-drafting, polyomino cat-placement board game for 1–4 players (expandable to 6 with the Late Arrivals expansion). Players are citizens of Squalls End on a rescue mission to the Isle of Cats, aiming to save as many cats as possible before the evil Lord Vesh arrives. Each cat is represented by a unique polyomino tile, and players must find a way to fit them onto their boat while managing resources and completing personal and shared objectives.
Throughout the game, players draft cards to gain resources, discover treasures, and learn lessons that provide unique scoring opportunities. Strategic decisions are required to efficiently rescue cats, fill their boats, and maximize points by grouping families of cats and covering dangerous rats or broken sections. The game also features a family mode for simpler play and a solo mode for individual challenges.
The Isle of Cats combines spatial puzzle elements with resource management and card drafting, offering a blend of tactical depth and accessibility. The game is known for its engaging theme, replayability, and the challenge of optimizing tile placement to achieve the highest score before time runs out.
The Isle of Cats has settled into the collection as a proven classic—its staying power comes from a blend of spatial puzzle and resource management that still feels fresh after years of play. The core appeal for seasoned groups is the way it compresses tough decisions into a tight, 90-minute arc: every round, you’re balancing card drafting, resource allocation, and the challenge of fitting polyomino cats onto your boat. The scoring system rewards both tactical flexibility and long-term planning, with multiple avenues to pursue points—grouping families, covering rats, and chasing lesson cards. For veteran players, the real hook is the tension between optimizing your own board and adapting to the shifting draft, all while racing the clock.
From a logistics standpoint, the base box is sufficient for most groups, but those who want to keep expansions and promos in one place will need the Big Box. Setup and teardown are straightforward but not instant—expect about 15 minutes to get everything sorted and ready, especially if you’re running a full table. The game’s footprint is moderate, but the abundance of polyomino tiles and cards means you’ll want a dedicated table. With a 90-minute playtime, this is a main event title, not a filler; it’s best slotted as the centerpiece of a game night rather than squeezed between shorter games.
Teaching The Isle of Cats is a procedural affair—plan for a 20-minute rules overview, especially if you need to clarify how boat rooms work and the penalties for leaving spaces uncovered. Once the first round is underway, the parallel play structure means you can step away to check on other tables; players are mostly focused on their own boards, with minimal direct interaction. This keeps the room’s energy steady and focused, but don’t expect much table talk beyond the occasional groan over a missed tile. For groups that enjoy optimizing puzzles without a lot of friction, it’s a reliable choice that rewards repeat plays and careful planning.
