Lost Cities
Official Description:
Lost Cities is a card game in the Kosmos two-player series where the objective is to gain points by mounting profitable archaeological expeditions to five distinct sites: the Himalayas, the Brazilian Rain Forest, the Desert Sands, the Ancient Volcanoes, and Neptune's Realm. Each player guides a team of explorers, deciding which expeditions to embark upon and how much to invest in their success. The game is fast-paced, requiring players to balance the potential rewards of an expedition against the risk of failing to cover its initial costs.
On each turn, a player must play one card from their hand and then draw a replacement card from either the deck or a discard pile. Cards can be played to an expedition in ascending order or discarded to a shared pile for that color. Investment cards, represented by handshakes, can be played at the start of an expedition to double, triple, or quadruple the final score for that suit. However, these must be placed before any numbered cards, adding a layer of strategic timing to the gameplay.
The game concludes immediately when the last card is drawn from the deck. Scoring involves totaling the values of cards in each expedition and subtracting a 20-point "expedition cost." This net value is then multiplied by any investment cards played; notably, if the total is negative, the multipliers will increase the penalty. A 20-point bonus is awarded for any expedition containing eight or more cards. The player with the highest cumulative score across all expeditions is declared the winner.
Lost Cities stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of strategic card games, blending push-your-luck mechanics with a competitive edge. As a legacy title, it has carved out a niche in the world of two-player games, offering a solid table-time value that keeps it relevant in any collection. The game's tactical depth is underscored by its requirement for players to commit to colors wisely, as lower cards can abruptly halt an expedition's progress. Its compact design and minimalist components make it a portable choice, ensuring it remains a staple for quick, engaging sessions.
From a hosting perspective, Lost Cities is the epitome of a grab-and-go experience, with its setup being as simple as opening the box. The game fits seamlessly into a game night as a reliable secondary option, perfect for filling gaps between more extensive sessions. Its 30-minute playtime ensures that it doesn't overstay its welcome, making it an ideal choice for those looking to maintain a lively pace throughout the evening.
Teaching Lost Cities is a straightforward affair, with its light learning curve allowing players to grasp the mechanics by the second round. The competitive nature of the game injects a dynamic energy into the room, as players engage in indirect blocking and strategic decision-making. The skill dividend here lies in the players' ability to balance risk and reward, honing their strategic timing and decision-making skills. This level of interaction keeps participants engaged and ensures that the game remains a lively and thought-provoking experience.
