Fafnir
Official Description:
The chicken "Fafnir" lays two new gems each day, and all the players want to acquire these gems on the off chance that they'll be more valuable. Players bid for the gems using the gems they already have, and the winner receives the new gems, while the other players receive consolation prizes. However, if a player bids using gems of the same color, they must discard those gems, making it a careful balance of risk and reward.
Throughout the game, players must decide when to bid aggressively and when to hold back, as the value of the gems is not determined until the end of the game. The final value of each color is based on the number of gems of that color that have been discarded, adding a layer of strategy and unpredictability.
Fafnir is a game of bluffing, bidding, and timing, where players must outthink their opponents and manage their resources wisely to come out ahead. The unique scoring system and whimsical theme make it a distinctive entry in the auction and bidding genre.
Fafnir’s staying power comes from its sharp auction mechanics and the way it weaponizes resource management. Players are forced to shed gems to bid, directly influencing the market and final scoring. This creates a feedback loop where every hand action is a market signal, and the tension is constant—especially for those who thrive on reading opponents and timing their moves. After years of managing tables, I’ve seen Fafnir consistently reward players who can juggle risk, bluffing, and market manipulation. It’s not a flashy centerpiece, but it’s a reliable draw for groups who want a dense, interactive economic puzzle in a compact package.
Physically, Fafnir is a host’s friend. The Oink box is as portable as they come, and the wooden tokens and cloth bag keep setup and teardown under five minutes. There’s no sprawling board or fiddly bits to wrangle—just a tight set of components that fit any table. With a 20-minute runtime, it’s a natural fit as a gap-filler or opener, especially when you want something with teeth but don’t want to commit the whole night. It’s easy to keep in a bag for conventions or multi-table events, and it won’t crowd out other games on the schedule.
Teaching Fafnir is a procedural affair. The rules are straightforward, but the implications of each action—especially how discards drive market value—require a focused explanation. Once the first round is underway, you can usually step away, but expect to field questions about scoring until players see the endgame in action. The competitive, high-interaction nature keeps the table lively; players are constantly watching each other’s bids and discards, which ramps up the energy and keeps everyone engaged. For groups that enjoy direct competition and emergent strategy, Fafnir delivers a concentrated dose of both.
