Pandemic Legacy: Season 1
Official Description:
Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 is a co-operative campaign game with an overarching story arc played through 12-24 sessions, depending on how well your group does at the game. The world is on the brink of disaster, and players are members of a disease control team tasked with treating disease hotspots while researching cures for four plagues. Each month brings new objectives and challenges, with the story evolving based on the outcomes of previous games.
As the campaign progresses, decisions made by the players have lasting consequences, permanently altering the game board, components, and rules. Cities may fall to panic, characters can gain scars or even be lost, and new rules and components are introduced as the story unfolds. The legacy format ensures that no two campaigns will play out the same way, as the narrative and gameplay are shaped by the players' choices.
Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 builds on the core mechanics of the original Pandemic game, adding a narrative-driven experience that immerses players in a high-stakes struggle to save humanity. The evolving story and permanent changes create a unique and engaging experience, making each campaign a distinct journey.
Permanent board changes, evolving rules, and a sealed-component system put Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 in the “finished campaign” category for most collections. Once the 12-24 session arc is complete, the box is either a trophy or a spent resource—there’s no replay loop. For veteran groups, the appeal is the irreversible narrative: every decision leaves a mark, and the campaign’s stakes escalate as the world map and ruleset mutate. This is the title that set the bar for campaign gaming, and it remains the reference point for what a legacy system can do to a familiar engine.
Logistically, this is a main event game. Setup is a 15-minute process, with extra time needed to manage sealed dossiers, legacy decks, and the occasional destruction of cards or stickers. You’ll want a dedicated table and a group committed to regular sessions; the game’s physical footprint and campaign structure don’t lend themselves to casual drop-ins or one-off plays. Expect to keep the box out for weeks, with components in various states of modification. It’s not a gap-filler—this is the night’s focus, and the session clock is a reliable 60 minutes once everyone is dialed in.
Teaching Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 is a procedural task—plan for a 20-minute rules rundown, especially as stickered rules and new objectives overwrite the familiar Pandemic framework. The collaborative nature means you can’t just walk away after the teach; the table will need a steady hand to clarify evolving mechanics and adjudicate new rule drops. The interaction is pure teamwork, and the stakes keep the room invested—expect a lot of table talk, shared tension, and collective groans as the campaign’s twists land. For groups that thrive on shared narrative and high-stakes decisions, this is still the benchmark.
