TL;DR: FOUR THINGS
- Hook: MCU-aligned deck-building expansion brings in Excessive Violence/Kindness keywords and Triggered Artifacts. - Teacher’s Note: Explain Excessive triggers clearly; differentiate MCU characters from original comic versions. - Logistics: Compact expansion carton; discard packaging after consolidating cards into core game box. - Verdict: Decent roster addition featuring Ego and Ronan despite mechanical overlap with original set.
Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game – Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy
Official Description:
In space, the rule of law is more of a loose guideline, so someone has to guard the galaxy. As your adventure unfolds, players recruit the well-meaning but questionable methods of the Guardians of the Galaxy to fight against galactic threats like Ronan the Accuser. This Marvel Cinematic Universe expansion for Legendary features characters and themes from the first and second Guardians of the Galaxy movies, allowing players to ride across the cosmos with these mighty misfits in their hands. This expansion includes 5 Heroes, 2 new Masterminds and Villain groups, and requires a Marvel Legendary Core Set to play. This expansion is ideal to join the Marvel Studios Phase 1 Base Set, expanding the cooperative deck-building experience with new mechanics and thematic challenges. The set provides a variety of new content to enhance gameplay variety and thematic immersion. The set features 100 cards, including Heroes such as Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Mantis, and the duo Rocket and Groot. Players face Masterminds Ego the Living Planet and Ronan the Accuser, alongside Villain groups like the Ravagers and Followers of Ronan. The expansion also introduces four new Schemes, including "Star-Lord's Awesome Mix Tape" and "Unleash the Abilisk Space Monster," to provide unique win and loss conditions.
Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game – Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy expansion brings a fresh tactical layer to the table with its MCU-aligned themes and the introduction of Excessive Violence/Kindness keywords and Triggered Artifacts. This expansion, featuring characters like Star-Lord and Gamora, offers a solid table-time value, enhancing the cooperative deck-building experience with its unique thematic challenges. Despite some mechanical overlap with the original set, the inclusion of Masterminds like Ego and Ronan adds depth, making it a reliable secondary option for those familiar with the series. As a new addition, it reflects its current value by offering a fresh perspective on the Guardians' universe, appealing to both seasoned players and newcomers. From a hosting perspective, the expansion's compact carton is a logistical advantage, allowing for easy integration into the core game box once the packaging is discarded. With a session time of about 60 minutes, it fits well as a main event for game nights, providing a substantial yet manageable experience. The setup requires a bit of preparation, but the thematic immersion and strategic depth it offers make it worth the effort, especially for those looking to dive deep into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Teaching this expansion involves a procedural approach, requiring about 20 minutes to cover the nuances of the new mechanics and differentiate MCU characters from their comic counterparts. The parallel play interaction keeps the room's energy collaborative, allowing players to focus on their strategies without direct conflict. The game's design encourages strategic planning and logical thinking, offering a skill dividend that enhances players' ability to navigate complex systems. This makes it an engaging choice for groups looking to explore the Guardians' adventures while honing their tactical skills.
