9 Lives
Official Description:
9 Lives is a card game where you'll be playing as a cat and the goal is to be the last cat standing. The game features quirky scenarios and funny artworks of cats doing crazy cat stuff. Its a game ideally played by friends and family during gatherings.
The game can be played by 2 to 5 players and can go from 15-30 minutes. You will be playing as a cat with 9 Lives and the goal is to eliminate other players before you own nine lives runs out. There are two decks in the game: the Paw cards, which allows you to play tricks and actions to give you the advantage; and Karma cards, which simulates the scenarios that happen on a player's turn. The game features an exciting balance of strategy and randomness which leaves keeping guessing how to play smarter on your next game.
9 Lives operates in the tradition of fast-paced, head-to-head card games that thrive on direct player conflict and unpredictable outcomes. Its roots are firmly in the casual and filler segment, with a design that leans into chaotic, comical scenarios—cats sabotaging each other, wild reversals, and a steady stream of table banter. Over years of managing tables, I’ve seen titles like this earn their place as reliable secondary options: they don’t dominate the shelf, but they consistently deliver solid table-time value, especially for groups seeking a break from heavier fare. Its legacy status is earned through longevity and the ability to spark memorable moments, even if it rarely becomes the centerpiece of a collection.
Physically, the game is streamlined for quick deployment. The minimalist white box and compact card set make it easy to slot into any session, and the original cat comic art gives it immediate visual appeal. Setup is minimal—open the box, shuffle two decks, and you’re ready to go. With a 30-minute playtime, it’s best positioned as a gap-filler or opener, ideal for warming up a group or bridging between longer games. There’s little overhead in terms of components, and the branding ensures it stands out on the table without demanding extra space or attention.
From a teaching perspective, 9 Lives is approachable but not entirely hands-off. The rules are straightforward, but the variety of card abilities means the first playthrough will involve some reading and explanation. Most groups will be comfortable by the second round, but expect to clarify edge cases as new cards appear. The high-friction interaction keeps the room lively—players are constantly targeting each other, which drives engagement but can also spike the mental friction for those unaccustomed to direct conflict. The main skill dividend here is tactical adaptation: players must read the table, anticipate swings, and adjust their plans on the fly, making it a strong pick for groups that enjoy dynamic, reactive play.
