9 Lives
Official Description:
9 Lives is a card game where you'll be playing as a cat and the goal is to be the last cat standing. The game features quirky scenarios and funny artworks of cats doing crazy cat stuff. Its a game ideally played by friends and family during gatherings.
The game can be played by 2 to 5 players and can go from 15-30 minutes. You will be playing as a cat with 9 Lives and the goal is to eliminate other players before you own nine lives runs out. There are two decks in the game: the Paw cards, which allows you to play tricks and actions to give you the advantage; and Karma cards, which simulates the scenarios that happen on a player's turn. The game features an exciting balance of strategy and randomness which leaves keeping guessing how to play smarter on your next game.
9 Lives has settled into the collection as a proven standby for groups that want a direct, chaotic contest with a comic edge. Its staying power comes from a take-that core that never really loses its punch—every session is a string of wild reversals, with players lobbing tricks and sabotages in a bid to be the last cat standing. The game’s humor and unpredictable swings keep it from feeling stale, even after years of play. For veteran hosts, the appeal is in how quickly the table energy ramps up; it’s a reliable trigger for big reactions and memorable moments, which is why it still earns a spot when the group wants something loud and interactive.
Physically, 9 Lives is a breeze to wrangle. The minimalist white box is compact and easy to spot on the shelf, and the original cat comic art gives it a distinct table presence without clutter. Setup is straightforward—just two decks and a handful of player markers—so you’re up and running in under fifteen minutes. It fits best as a featured filler or a high-energy opener; the thirty-minute playtime is just right for breaking the ice or resetting the mood between heavier games. There’s no sprawling board or fiddly bits to manage, so it’s easy to deploy even in crowded or casual settings.
From a teaching perspective, expect to spend a few minutes upfront walking through the variety of card effects—there’s a lot of reading, and the card interactions can get dense for new players. Once the first round is underway, most groups settle in quickly, but you’ll want to stay nearby to clarify edge cases and keep the action moving. The high-friction dynamic means the room gets loud fast; players are constantly targeting each other, and the swings can spark both laughter and mock outrage. It’s not a game you can walk away from entirely, but the payoff is a table that’s fully engaged and feeding off the chaos.
