[Technicolor Musings] Transgender Day of Remembrance

November is often celebrated as Transgender Awareness Month in LGBT circles and last November 20 was celebrated as the Transgender Day of Remembrance, in honor of our transgender brother and sisters who lost their lives due to hate crimes and related violence.

Locally folks gathered at the Quezon City Memorial Circle for a candlelight memorial, as has been the practice. And while the official event is past, it may help to spend some time today in reflection over the fact that the transgender community remains a subject of a lot of discrimination and violence even here in the Philippines. But like most such crimes targeting an oppressed minority, a lot of these crimes go unreported or discussed under different circumstances.

We have a long way to go. But we remember those who have passed on and we continue the fight for equal rights and recognition in their name.
