[Books] Mockingjay

MockingjayThe end of any series is a tricky thing. On the one hand, you're glad that it's all coming to an end and you look forward to the resolution of all the different plot threads that have been gathering steam for the past few chapters. Then again, part of you feels bad that it's all going to be over soon and you'll have to find another series of books to follow or perhaps even another author entirely. It really depends on the situation and thus such periods are difficult times to map out.

This series was been quite the enjoyable experience for me - one that I might even return to some time in the future. Maybe it's just because I had pretty low expectations of these books when I started or other factors entirely, but in the end I have to admit I really came to appreciate these books. Collins did a pretty great job of putting things all together and in such a manner that was accessible to younger audiences without alienating older ones.

And after following the various characters across two different books, naturally it was time for everything to come together in one big finale. And Collins really decided to push the limits of where this book could go by taking us out of the comfortable pattern of the past books into explored territory.

[Movies] Battle: Los Angeles (2011)

Battle: Los Angeles (2011)It's admirable how there are movie makers who are trying to innovate existing movie genres. Thus we have those attempts to try alternative spins on your typical mega monster movie or looking for new perspectives to take in a science fiction story. This kind of behavior is generally a good thing since it means people are actually trying to exercise their creative energies instead of just sticking to an established concept and switching some of the names around.

This doesn't mean all such attempts are great, mind you. But that's all part of the creative process, right? You need to crawl before you can walk and even then you're still going to stumble a bit here and there. I'm not sure how to classify this particular movie given that analogy, but I suppose we just might find out in the course of this review.

The movie is your classic case of trying to capitalize on something that is generally accepted as safe / popular. In this case, its the general support for the US military. We have seen similar stories with the likes of the Transformers franchise and their support for the US Air Force. While I don't these sentiments of support are universally accepted around the world, but in the end that's what the producers gambled on here.

[Movies] A Single Man (2009)

A Single Man (2009)As much as I'm an out and proud gay man, it doesn't mean that all of the "classic" gay stereotypes apply to me, as if often the case with stereotypes in general. Sure, I love musical theater and I'll ogle a go-go boy while at the club. However there are some aspects of "traditional" gay culture that I don't necessarily subscribe to, I also have nothing against them. Different strokes for different folks, and all that.

One aspect that I'll never really get is the whole models thing. Beyond the basic level of appreciation for a guy with a hot body who's posing in next to nothing, the whole obsession with couture, the models themselves and their unique lifestyle has never really appealed to me. On some fundamental level I can still appreciate shows like Project Runway since I respect the artistic goals of the designers but don't expect me to get on board with shows like America's Next Top Model since the models annoy me to death and too much Tyra makes my head hurt.

So when this movie came along with the name Tom Ford attached to it, it didn't really generate a blip on my geek radar. Yes, I am aware that he's a fashion designer but that's about it. I have no clue as to how to differentiate his fashion creations from anyone else nor would I ever see the value in trying to invest in his creations either. But hey, the movie got some good reviews and so it seemed appropriate to eventually get around to watching it.

[Health] Free HIV Testing Centers In Metro Manila

The Take the Test Project has published a list of a number of safe, quick and reliable Free HIV testing centers around Metro Manila for those who want to get in the habit. The Philippines is one of the few countries in the world where HIV cases continue to rise dramatically and we should all do our part to remain in-the-know about what HIV is, what the risks are and how to seek out treatment in case of infection.

Take the Test Project

The Geeky Guide firmly supports HIV awareness programs like this and we felt it important enough to re-publish the list of centers for those looking for a place to go for quick and confidential results.

[Movies] American Psycho (2000)

American Psycho (2000)Book to movie translations are a very mixed bag. While I don't think it's a bad idea to create movies of this sort, I do recognize that it's a major undertaking that will test any director. Plus if the studio doesn't invest the necessary resources to allow for the book's original vision to be fully realized, then there are bound to be problems.

This movie certainly felt like it was based on a book given the rather lengthy dialog. Oftentimes more than half the dialog in a book gets left on the cutting room floor but there was clearly an attempt here to carry a lot of the original words into this silver screen adaptation. The end result was a tad confusing though and it leaves me wondering about whether or not it was a good idea to tackle this film.

Then again, the subject matter was significantly complex - trying to understand the mind of a serial killer. That's hard enough to accomplish within a single novel so what more in the rather limited medium that is the thriller movie. While I can't (and wouldn't) comment on how this movie fared versus the original book, I have to admit it was quite an intriguing and yet also confusing adventure.

[TV] No Ordinary Family: Season 1

No Ordinary Family: Season 1More and more I feel that the superhero TV show genre is cursed. It's very, very rare now that a new superhero-themed TV show manages to get anywhere far and this 2010 US TV season has been especially brutal on the genre. First there was the quick death of The Cape and recently this show received the axe as well.

I guess I'm not too surprised - there seems to be a lot of confusion in Hollywood as what they want to do with superhero TV shows. In the movie world it's a bit easier since you get bigger budgets, ridiculous special effects and a big climactic battle in place of a running plot. But TV is different and it needs a lot more planning, a longer term world view for your characters and a decent enough budget to make both the costumes and the fight scenes decent.

This show suffered a lot of identity issues that were never fully resolved, at least in my opinion. The premise and the fact that it was on ABC would make you think this was going to be some sort of a family-centric comedy. Instead is struggled between the comedy and drama genres and eventually chose drama and kind of sucked at it. There's a lesson here somewhere, but I'm just surprised that I actually finished the entire run of this show.

[Web] The Continued Relevance of Forums

In the very early days, a lot of online interaction in the early days of the internet was limited to the BBS sphere - those very early bulletin boards that allowed people around the world to discuss particular topics, make new connections and basically tap the power of the proto social web to come to new insights and conclusions. Over the years our online interactions have shifted to email, instant messaging and now social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. But at its core, it's still the same principle of communication and coordination - someone leaves a message to be read by others and then this leaves the option open for comments.

PinoyExchange

And despite all these innovations in terms of new ways of communicating with others, the web forum or bulletin board continues to remains a very vibrant and active means of conversation for many people (this geek included). Even in the local sphere, sites like PinoyExchange continue to thrive as a web community where people can celebrate things that they love with fellow fans, talk about current issues or just try to find answers to their questions.

Along similar lines, forums remain highly relevant in technical support circles where people continually resort to such sites to document errors they're encountering in the hopes of someone having the answer to their questions. I've relied on a tech forum for such answers more than once mainly because it works - who needs tech support hotlines when the wealth of intelligence of the social web is always at your disposal, right? If you're diligent enough, you're bound to find the answers.

PinoyG4M

Recently I joined PinoyG4M given a friend of mine helps admin the board and I actually attended a party organized by the group. It's interesting to note that the story behind this particular forum is related to the shift of the original Guys4Men site to PlanetRomeo and thus the people who used to be active on those forums found a new refuge in this site. While the new PlanetRomeo site continues to serve the purpose of the original site, the need for these kinds of interactions on the forums still needed to be fulfilled. The site is certainly fun in its own way and I'm sure I'll get around to discussing the site at length, perhaps in a Technicolor Musings post some time in the future.

The forum continues to thrive and I doubt it will die out anytime soon. As long as people want to talk, share ideas and find answers to questions together, then forums will continue to exist. Even with sites like Facebook trying to adopt the forum-style concept within their own Groups function, the need for the standalone forum will remain.

So what are your favorite forums? Why do you continue to participate? When do you think a forum holds the answers that you need versus the popular social media sites? Leave your insights in the comments!

[Books] The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents

The Amazing Maurice and His Educated RodentsSometime back my Mom asked me to check out the Redwall series of books to determine if it was any good. We normally got into little reading ventures like this as part of her efforts to figure out if these were books that my younger brother could read (and seriously if they were any good). We had done this previously with Harry Potter books and then this series followed.

I just couldn't wrap my head around it and I never really liked the series. Heck, I never even finished the book. I suppose it's something like what my friend feels about anthropomorphic animals in general. It just seemed a bit too strange to me to have to enjoy adventures involving various rodents and other animals laying siege to other castles and the like.

When I first saw this book, I was a tad worried about what it might be like. As much as I love Terry Pratchett's Discworld books, this one seemed to dance a bit too closely to the area of talking mice engaged in little adventures. But in this first venture of a Discworld book targeted younger audiences, again Pratchett found a most interesting way to spin this sort of an animal-centric tale.

[Movies] Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)There's something about trilogies that seems all nice and neat for movies. When you start going beyond the third installment, it more often than not results in increasingly bad stories and principal actors associated with the franchise dropping out in order to prioritize other projects.

I was never particularly for or against this particular franchise. As a kid I enjoyed the original Disneyland ride that the movies were based around but that's beyond it. I never really developed a particular affinity for the whole pirate genre since it always seemed a tad primitive and way too...dirty, at least for me. I'm a bit of a neat freak at random moments in the day, so the rather accurate depictions of pirates in these movies always grossed me out on some fundamental level.

But when the news broke that this franchise was pushing in the dangerous waters known as the fourth installment, I was initially skeptical about their chances for success. I mean seriously, how many movies can you say that you loved the fourth edition, apart from maybe Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home, but that's just me. The initial buzz had Orlando Bloom as the focus of the movie, but thankfully the folks behind the scenes realized the error of this decision and went with the right bloke.

[Technicolor Musings] My Short Quasi-History of Meet-ups and EBs

So I recently signed up for the LGBT forum PinoyG4M, which is sort of where the local forum folks from the new evolved (?) gay dating site Guys4Men sort of migrated to. The site is an independent effort by folks who were active over on the original G4M (as far as I understand the history - feel free to correct me guys) but has managed to survive while G4M turned into PlanetRomeo. Ah, the shadows of my gay dating site past.

Gay Forum Meme

Anyway, the forum has turned out to be fairly fun at this point, although naturally one can't help but feel like the red-headed new kid at school when you join a fairly established web community. There's all the in-jokes and people knowing who everyone else is beyond their avatars and usernames, but it's all good stuff. But the group is pretty nice and there's a bit of a gathering planned for this weekend and as of the time of the drafting of this post, I'm not quite sure if I'm going (or in this case "have gone", temporally speaking).

And that just got me thinking about my long yet highly uneventful history of online forums and related encounters and very, very little in-person meetings. And since I needed a blog entry for today, I ended up with this instead. Pardon the faux-randomness.

[Pink Culture] LGBT Videos May 15-21, 2011

This week we had at least two videos really going viral in support of LGBT rights around the world.

This first one is a really poignant piece from Pink Dog SG in support of the equal right of everyone to love. Keep a tissue handy for this video...

PINK DOT 2011: SUPPORT THE FREEDOM TO LOVE - 18 JUNE 2011

And this other video is in response to recent Tennessee proposed legislation to ban the use of the word "gay" in public schools. Thankfully, former Star Trek actor and LGBT rights activist George Takei has an interesting proposal to help fight this new law:

George Takei vs. Tennessee's "Don't Say Gay" Bill

All together now - It's OK to be Takei!!!

[Movies] The Cat Returns / Neko no Ongaeshi (2002)

The Cat Returns / Neko no Ongaeshi (2002)When you think of Studio Ghibli, you automatically associate their movies with Hayao Miyazaki. To his credit, he did establish the studio and he created many of their most popular films. But in the same that Pixar has started to grow to allow new blood to try their hand at directing films, so too has Studio Ghibli.

This is one of those movies, which ironically is sort of a loose sequel to another non-Miyazaki Ghibli movie. While it certainly has a very different flavor compared to the core Miyazaki Ghibli movies, it's still quite a delightful and entertaining experience. When you think about it - there has yet to be a Studio Ghibli movie that I've had the chance to see that I didn't like or enjoy. And that's pretty impressive - I could more or less say the same thing about Pixar except for the fact that I didn't particularly enjoy Cars after all. But with Ghibli, I've enjoyed every single release. But hey, there are still quite a number of them that I still need to get around to watching them.

And admittedly I do like cats, so that probably helped me appreciate this movie. Although certain characters were a tad more annoying than others, on the whole it was pretty fun. But darn those cats.

[TV] The Office US: Season 4

The Office US: Season 4We all have our reasons for watching the TV shows that we like. Sometimes we affiliate ourselves with one character or another. Other times we just like the nature of the writing. Or perhaps we just like the characters because they were adapted from other media such as from comics or movies. The list of possible reasons go on and on and on.

Admittedly what hooked me in to watching the US version of The Office was the on-going romance of the characters Jim and Pam. There's something wonderfully endearing about their dynamic and their on-screen chemistry that really strikes a chord in me somewhere. Plus Jim seems to have a lot of the same quirks that my partner has - or is it the other way around?

But beyond that, this season did present a lot of growth for the other characters of the show and made it a lot more appealing on more levels. Beyond their initial writing presenting them as caricatures of real people (at least that's always how it came across to me) this season was able to flesh out a lot of the other members of the show. While they all still retain their little idiosyncrasies and their personality quirks that make them the crazy crew that they are, they also become a bit more accessible and thus more real.

[Games] Elements

Elements: the GameLike many other geeks, I spent a good part of my younger years playing the collectible card game known as Magic: the Gathering. It was a pretty fun game despite how expensive the cards were and many a Saturday afternoon was spent trying to defeat other players with my carefully constructed decks. I eventually moved away from Magic since it was just so darned expensive to keep up. With new expansion sets coming out multiple times in a year and new cards being insanely powerful, it became harder and harder to continue to keep up with the times.

These days I'm more of a casual Magic player. I still have some of my old decks and time to time my partner and I dig out our cards and play a few rounds. It's still a pretty fun experience and I have no regrets about ever having gotten into the game. I just wish they had thought more about the players instead of going totally insane on the card generation such that it became really hard for new players to compete without a sizable investment.

I learned about this game through our circle of geek friends. At first glance it seemed like just another Magic: the Gathering clone, and so I was somewhat prepared to dismiss it as another passing casual gaming fad. But when I finally gave in and tried the game, the end result was pretty surprising.

[Books] Catching Fire

Catching FireThe whole notion of civilization surviving a some major catastrophe in the future is a common enough setting in science fiction novels. As much as a lot of science fiction writers try to be utopian in their approach to things, there are also a lot of writers who think the worst of the human race. Or there are those who choose to express their believe in the resilience of the human spirit by pitting us against such apocalyptic scenarios in order to see how we will prevail.

Or maybe it's just a cool concept to revisit and explore. In the same manner that we choose to explore the worlds of steampunk or our far off future amongst the stars or whatever. Sometimes it's a deliberate choice of setting. Other times it's just exploring an already established meme or cliche.

In this case, I'm sure that the author didn't go this route since it was easy. If anything, it certainly feels that she had a particular message that she wanted to convey and this rather dire setting was exactly what she needed. In fact, she certainly had a lot more to discuss than just the ordeals of how people survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

[Movies] Fast Five (2011)

Fast Five (2011)While I've always been big on the Transformers my love for robots never quite extended into a love for all machines in general. I can appreciate the ridiculous complexities of Rube Goldberg types of mechanical wonders but I never appreciated plain old cars. I loved my Transformers figures but I wasn't too keen on receiving Matchbox cars as gifts. The list goes on and on.

Sure, in my adulthood I have a practical respect for the value of automobiles as a means of getting around. However I never quite understood how people can talk about cars for hours and hours and how they constantly want to tinker with their engines, replace certain parts and essentially treat it like some sort of complex LEGO figure. Okay, maybe I can appreciate the sort of geeking out on a fundamental level, but the nuances of experimenting with cars is just beyond me.

So I never really got into this particular movie franchise for one reason or another. The whole muscle car and illegal racing scene just never really interested me. But the reviews for this particular movie were surprisingly good and I didn't quite feel the urge to watch the new 3D Priest movie. And so my partner and I ended up catching this movie - and I for one was pleasantly surprised with the results.

[Movies] Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)It's funny how it's typically the movies that I love the most that tend to have not yet appeared here on the Geeky Guide. I suppose it's a natural consequence of the fact that I watched a lot of these movies or read whichever book well before the Geeky Guide ever existed. And thus I just sort of assume that I've done my homework and written about it since I love the darn movie or book so much. But clearly that's not always the case and there remain to be quite a number of key items that have slipped through the cracks.

I remember first watching this movie in the wee hours of the morning on HBO Asia. I was all alone in the living room when I stumbled upon the movie already in-progress. I hadn't missed too much - but based on what I was seeing, I realized that this was the movie that my boyfriend at the time had been telling me about. And so I stayed up and watched - and it was glorious.

Admittedly, this movie has a lot of emotional significance for me. It remains to be one of those movies that truly struck me in my first year of coming out to people. Whether it was because of the music or the animated imagery or maybe just the fact that I'm a big theater geek at heart, I just fell in love with this movie. And I'm happy to take the time to write about it for today's Pink Culture update.

[Movies] Laputa: Castle in the Sky / Tenkū no Shiro Rapyuta (1986)

Laputa: Castle in the Sky / Tenkū no Shiro Rapyuta (1986)The works of Hayao Miyazaki have certainly captured the hearts of many fans around the world. It's hard to explain precisely why his movies are almost always loved - I guess you can attribute it to his eye for detail, the rich stories he likes to embrace and certainly his passion for the art form. The man's creative impact on the world is pretty impressive - a legacy that has inspired many other animators, storytellers and even video game creators.

My introduction to the works of Hayao Miyazaki and of course Studio Ghibli came rather late in life. But with the help of my loving partner, I've been steadily going through more and more of the movies and each time I'm pretty much blown away. I'm already at a point where I'm not quite sure what my favorite Miyazaki movie is given how all of them have many great points worth citing in their defense.

This movie is certainly among those in contention for most favorite given the wonderful mix of comedy, science fiction and of course the presence of robots. Yeah, you always stand a better chance of winning me over once robots somehow become involved.

[TV] The Office US: Season 3

The Office US: Season 3Movies are great things. In the span of 1-2 hours, a creative team is able to come together to tell a great story through the combination of spoken lines, great visuals and all those other elements. In some ways it's like a poem - you only have so much time to tell a particular story. And that's brilliant in itself.

Some people might argue that TV is more like that - how you only have 30 minutes to an hour to tell a particular story. While that may be true, the bigger picture is that the really great shows can develop a much larger plot over several seasons. In that sense, you can compare it more to a serial novel - a great story that builds up over time, week after week. A lot of sitcoms have a problem with this and they take a few seasons before they get comfortable enough to develop a larger story arc. And some start it from day one.

I don't quite know where exactly you can trace the core story at the heart of The Office that made me fall in love with the show, but some can argue that it started at the very beginning. The idle flirtation between Jim and Pam just develops quite well and really turns this show into a very long-running romantic comedy - without going over the line into the realm of absurdity.

[Gadgets] My Kindle 3

In case you haven't already figured out, I'm a bit of a bibliophile - a book geek, if you will. I got started on books at a pretty young age and my mother had always encouraged us to read. Sure, you might get a toy as a reward for good grades at the end of a term. However any time that you find yourselves in a bookstore with her, you just know that you'll be able to get a book as well. I suppose that's how you raise a family of readers - you overwhelm them with reading options.

In these modern times, there's an overwhelming amount of content ready for consumption. We have al of the internet to celebrate in terms of web video, blogs and other fun things. Great movies continue to be released (and a lot of not so great ones). TV continues to try and break new ground (or rehash old ideas when the budget's tight). The list goes on and on - there's always something to get into. And yet I continue to read up a storm like any other book geek is expected to do. It's my life for now and I'm darn proud of it.

My Kindle 3

And today's post is part review and part celebration of my continuing geekery with the (inevitable?) purchase of my very own Amazon Kindle 3. And funnily enough, it also took the promptings and encouragement of my mother for me to finally get one of my own. Yes, she has one as well - it's a family thing.

For disclosure purposes, yes, I am an active Amazon Affiliate - hence the occasional banner ads and the many product links in my reviews. For the most part, this remains an honest review of the device based on my own reading needs, but of course I can't stop you from thinking that this is all just an effort to get you to buy one using the links on this post. It's really up to you.

[Books] The Hunger Games

The Hunger GamesI've made reference to what I've termed as the "Post-Harry Potter universe" that we live in now. You know what I mean - this renaissance of young adult fiction writing spurred on by a steady demand for adventure stories geared towards younger (but not too young!) audiences with publishing houses like Scholastic being one of the primary driving forces. This is not necessarily a bad thing given it has encouraged kids to read more in this age of the internet and console gaming, and there have been a few gems out there.

At the same time, a lot of these books aren't too bad thus you get a lot of adult readers also taking the plunge in reading these stories. I guess there's that eternal child in all of us that finds it easy to appreciate a good story, especially those that seem like the natural evolutionary descendants of the fairy tales of old.

However I think that there are a few books out there that are clearly mis-labeled in terms of genre or the whole young adult classification. If anything, I can see that a lot of newer authors are getting lumped into this category in the interests of further developing the market. Thus more and more I can see how some writers who are clearly equipped to tackle mainstream science fiction and fantasy may end up having some great stories hidden amongst the young adult titles if you take the time to look and get past your own prejudices.

[Movies] Repo Men (2010)

It's always interesting to note how movies tend to come in sets. It's like that once the project gets the green light, another studio will catch wind of this and will rush a similar project. Thus you get the fluff piece Armageddon versus the more serious depiction that was Deep Impact. Or there was the rather neurotic Antz in contrast to the lighter and much more popular A Bug's Life. The list goes on and on. And this doesn't count the very deliberate efforts by studios like The Asylum, who have taken the art of imitation to an entirely different level altogether.

Regardless of the questions behind the scenes in terms of how information like this gets leaked or shared between writers, studio executives or whatever, it does present us with multiple perspectives on a single topic. This can actually be a pretty good thing since it means that we get to view multiple interpretations of a scene in history or multiple theories around an event - fictional or otherwise. It's the equivalent of multiple writers tackling a single topic, but in a more visual medium. You get what I mean.

So how did this alternate take on the whole organ repossession concept strike me? Well, it's a little hard to say. After all, it's a pretty grim topic when you think about and turning things into an eye-for-an-eye kind of mentality instead of taking something of equitable value seems to be a step backwards in terms of the whole evolution of the barter system into our current methodologies around currency and the such. And trying to take this idea too serious can have adverse affects on your lunch.

[Holidays] Happy Mother's Day!

Today is the second Sunday of May and you know what that means....

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!

Into the Woods - The Witch

Oh yes, today is the we celebrate our mothers - those amazing ladies who brought us into this world. Whatever your personal issues may be, this is the day to move past all that and remind your mom that you love them and that you appreciate everything that they've done for you.

After all, not matter what they've done over the years, the reason is the same. To quote the Witch from Sondheim's Into the Woods, "I was just trying to be a good mother."

Yeah, I'm campy that way.

[Metro] We're Finally Going To Watch Kylie!

There are very few items on my virtual bucket list at this point - and I say this since I know that (1) I'm still pretty young and there's a lot to experience and (2) I've already managed to get a lot done with the help of my partner Tobie so it seems too early to feel the "pressure" of time. However one item that has been on my list has been the desire to watch Kylie Minogue live in concert given the role she's played in my gay life.

Kylie Minogue Aphrodite Tour 2011

But now we're definitely going to be able to mark this bucket list item as complete come 08:00pm on July 5 at the Araneta Coliseum. With the recent confirmation that Kylie's coming to Manila and with ticket sales going live as of 10:00am on May 6, my partner and I are officially booked! Yes, we have our tickets in Upper Box A, since we felt this would give us a decent view of the stage as a whole without being too far away. As much as we'd love to throw more money into getting closer to the stage, the greater reality is that with how everyone will inevitably stand up during the concert, higher seats seem most prudent.

For those who still want to get tickets, your best bet is to call the TicketNet hotline at (02) 911-555, especially if you're aiming for selecting seats from the reserved seating sections. Otherwise, you can also go fill out the web form for ticket reservations.

Ticket prices are as follows:
  • Patron VIP 101 & 103 - PHP 15,840
  • Patron Regular - PHP 126,75
  • Lower Box Center - PHP 8,450
  • Lower Box Sides - PHP 6,340
  • Upper Box A - PHP 3,700

[Movies] Ponyo (2008)

Ponyo (2008)I'm eternally thankful to my partner for introducing me to Studio Ghibli and its well-crafted movies. It's more than just the beauty of the animation and the quality of almost every single panel / scene. Then you add in the wonderful storytelling and the constant reminder that just because it's a cartoon doesn't mean it's targeted for children alone.

The question of Studio Ghibli's continued survival in these 3D-focused and CGI-obsessed times has been floating around there a lot. Despite all the awards that the studio has won over the years, news keeps popping up that the Studio may be in trouble even with support from the likes of Disney-Pixar and such.

So every time a new Ghibli movie is announced and then released, it's a cause for minor celebration at least for my partner and I. And this is considering that I'm still trying to work through all the other Studio Ghibli movies ever released, I'm sort of burning the candle at both ends for now.

And its glorious.

[TV] The Office US: Season 2

The Office US: Season 2A lot of TV shows get very limited test runs in order to minimize the risks of the studio while still allowing new blood into the line-up. Such tests have yielded some pretty great shows but at the same time they've also killed a number of them prematurely.

As far as I'm concerned, a six-episode run is hardly a true measure of a TV show's full potential, especially with North American audiences. British audiences seem to work better with the six-episode serial perhaps more because of very focused storytelling and a greater chance that the show will come back for another 6-8 episode run in the future. However the average US television network program has very small chances of survival given the reliance on ratings numbers. I suppose one could postulate that it means that American audiences take a bit longer to warm up to a show compared to other markets, but that just might be perceived as racist, yes?

The fact that this show survived its very short first season was a small miracle in itself. Heck, I doubt I would have fully recommended that it get the green light myself if only based on its first limited run. But really, what can you tell about a show in just 6 episodes, right? Thankfully, this turned out to be one of those instances when Hollywood decided to gamble and went for it - much to our benefit as viewers.

[Games] LocoRoco 2 (PSP)

LocoRoco 2 (PSP)We recently bought ourselves a PlayStation Portable (PSP) as a sort of second anniversary gift for us to share, which is pretty cool. As much as we already have a lot of fun with our PS3, annoyingly enough there are console-specific titles that we can't get unless we jump to that platform. So staying with the Sony ecosystem of sorts, we opted for this handheld console unit to spice up our gaming life.

Now I had previously played different PSP games using consoles that belonged to friends and relatives, if only to pass the time. Of all the games, I was most drawn to Patapon, hence my recent review. But when we first bought the console, we couldn't immediately find a copy of any of the Patapon games given how old they were, so we ended up looking for alternatives.

Now this game was one that I knew nothing about apart from the fact that it was developed by the same people behind Patapon. Given the initial premise and the promising reviews, I picked up the title as something to tide me over. However the game was a lot more fun than expected and I'm definitely glad that we picked it up, even if only as a "substitute" at the time.

[Books] Beatrice and Virgil

Beatrice and VirgilEvery now and then I try to venture out of my comfort zone of science fiction and fantasy books in order to try and discover new authors that might strike my fancy. Sometimes I base it off the synopsis on the back of the cover. Sometimes I select titles based on how reviewers compare them to books that I already like. Any yes, sometimes I go by the title of the book alone.

That's sort of how I started reading Yann Martel's books. I started with Life of Pi mainly because I expected a comical book with animals as metaphorical characters or something. Of course I was totally wrong and it turned out to be a very serious survival piece quite literally about how a young boy survives being stranded on a lifeboat with wild animals. Not very happy stuff, but it was still a good read.

So with this experience in hand, I figured that I was more prepared to dive into another of his books with better expectations in mind. Of course I was still wrong, and I wonder if this is one of those cases when I don't seem to be a good fit for this particular author's writing.

[Movies] Thor (2011)

Thor (2011)In recent years superhero movies have become quite the staple in Hollywood. I guess to some extent it does feel like a no-brainer - take a pre-established character with a rich library of stories and adventures plus an existing fan base and turn it into a movie. Ensure you have one or two big name stars with a lot of money in your special effects budget and market the thing like crazy and boon - you get a minimum risk investment in terms of a movie with a higher potential for profits. While initial forays into the comic book world weren't necessarily as successful, the turn of the century has resulted in some pretty good movies, thus further egging on Hollywood to make more and take advantage of the perceived opportunity.

Now in terms of looking at the success of various comic book companies in terms of their Hollywood ventures, one would think that DC Comics has had a somewhat better run than Marvel Comics. DC started pretty early with movies based on characters like Superman and of course the almost never ending run of Batman movies that have mostly done well at the box office. On the flip side, Marvel's initial ventures like the old Captain America movie and the aborted Fantastic Four movie didn't do quite as well. It wasn't until they finally started adapting characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men into movies that their fortunes began to turn, although there were still some inconsistencies.

But now it's clear that Marvel has a big plan in mind for its movie projects and it's definitely working steadily towards that goal. Plus the decision to draw more influence from their Ultimates line of comics with their somewhat darker and more realistic portrayal of heroes has led to much more complex stories and a lot of potential for action and this movie is definitely no exception. In fact, I'd dare say that this has definitely been one of their better ventures into the movie world and one that clearly sets the stage for future projects.

[Metro] Is Kylie Minogue Really Coming to Manila? (CONFIRMED!)

Last Updated - May 2, 2011

Update 05.02.11 - Kylie.com has finally confirmed the concert date in Manila - although I'm not too happy with the results. The concert has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 5, 2011. Ugh, it's a week night concert! Tuesday, of all days. Personally, I can only hope that I can get out of work for the night, plus the need to actually afford the tickets.

Good luck to all of us Kylie fans! Tickets officially go on sale by May 6!

Original post follows:

Admittedly, I'm a huge Kylie Minogue fan. In fact, I dedicated a rather lengthy Technicolor Musings post to discussing her role in my life as a gay man, metaphorically speaking of course. And yes, watching a live Kylie Minogue concert together with my partner remains to be one of the big ticket items on my bucket list.

Recently news has broken out in the local part of the social network world that Kylie has confirmed that she'll be coming to Manila this July - which is pretty exciting news indeed.

If it's true. And that's where the trouble lies at this point.

So let's remain calm for a moment here and try digging past the social media hype to validate whether this is true or not. I promise to update this post with more accurate information should it come along as well.

[Movies] The Big Gay Musical (2009)

The Big Gay Musical (2009)So I'm gay and I like musicals - something that is arguably one of my most prominent / redundant Obviously Gay Trait (OGT) in The Broken Hearts Club parlance. Good grief, a lot of you probably haven't even seen that movie!

For some strange reason though, gay-marketed musical movies don't always turn out all that great, at least in my experience. Maybe it's a budget concern or perhaps there just isn't enough time dedicated to writing a truly compelling story and / or songs or whatever. In the direct-to-video LGBT movie market, musicals tend to be rather hit or miss, which is both highly ironic and sort of sad.

This movie employed multiple elements that you'd think would be right up my alley - the story within a story routine, a musical within the movie complete with campy songs and silly dance numbers, jabs at the conservatives / religious fundamentalists and a fair amount of gratuitous shirtless. While it wasn't enirely bad or anything like that, it also didn't quite work for me for some reason - perhaps something that we can figure out together in the course of this review.
