[Movies] Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds

Eating Out 2: Sloppy SecondsThe first Eating Out was loads of fun because of its plucky humor, hot actors and the thought that it was written and directed by a Filipino, namely Q. Allan Brocka.

I was surprised that they opted to create a sequel - then again given the limited yet still decent success of the first film, I can't blame them. It wasn't that bad and it was a mix of improvements and shortcomings compared to the first one, but then the same can be said about pretty much all sequels out there.

Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds had Jim Verraros returning as Kyle and Emily Brooke Hands as Gwen but in terms of the original cast, that was about it. The character of Marc, as originally played by Ryan Carnes now of Desperate Housewives fame, also returned albeit without Ryan given scheduling conflicts supposedly.

Where in the first film it was all about a straight guy trying to get the girl by pretending to be gay, the sequel has a gay guy (Kyle) pretending to be straight in order to get closer to confused farm boy exhibitionist Troy (Chukerman. Sure, the plot it itself is never going to win any Oscars, but it's the sort of light, campy humor that most folks can appreciate.

The movie upped the bar in terms of hotness quotient - there were a lot more scenes with the characters in various states of undress but at least it didn't feel like an idiotic porno just yet. Still, there was a fair amount of male full frontal nudity, although there wasn't a hard-on in sight. Figures.

The film was...well...okay for the most part. Nothing amazing but I didn't feel it was a waste of time either. Sure, there are better, more thought-provoking films out there to see, but then sometimes you just want to veg out on the couch, relax and watch something of limited intellectual value. This is when queer romantic comedies like this one come in handy.
